But as I'm sure all of you have noticed, Telkom's ADSL is suddenly a LOT faster, I'm capped and getting 300ms pings to the UK and 256Kbits downloads international. If this is a sign of things to come then I'm all for it.

As stated before, lets just hope this isn't a christmas freebie.

ye noticed it too

Could it be that allot of people are on holiday and lots of companys have closed and therefore bandwidth is availble to us.

If Sex is a pain in the Arse you doing it WRONG!

In fact, the changes happened the same day that Sentech started their beta testing. I posted about this in the Sentech section of the forum - http://www.myadsl.co.za/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1367 - but for some reason not everyone saw the relevance.

Yes a definent improvement and it would not surprise me one bit if Telkom dont drop their Cap in the not too distant future [:)]

I've posted in two topics with this...

did you read? the new SNO has been announced and is now official, plus, with Sentech and Powerband on the horizon, I think telkom thinks that their customers would be happier with this "faster" service they're starting to supply.

It's an old business trick, if you have a product that no one else has (no not me silly, no one! hehe) and there's a need for, providing a *** service doesn't really matter, as they NEED you to provide that service, however, when competition is introduced, and because they still need the infrastructure and business savvy/know how of how things operate (experience in the market etc), when you provide a better, still sub standard, service, your clients will think you are gods.

trust me... I've learnt this with the previous company I worked for, works like a charm! :) you crush competition like a wittle bug imho

Oh well ive just left a UK games server and had a latency of 200 which is alot better than before, and thats during the day aswell.
Hope things keep on improving, maybe the cap is next.[:)]

The reason we ping the UK is that it's the very first international stopping point for Telkom's ADSL (London Telecity) - and probably IPNET in general - if you ping the UK it could be considered your "best possible pings", once you start pinging the US, etc. it goes through the UK and then to them, you'll find that if your ping to the UK = 300 or so (which my pings are), then you're looking at a jump of a further 300 or so ms (between 600 and 800ms pings - if it doesn't time out that is).

Looks like the latency is back to normal again.

Pathetic.

BEWARE OF MAKING SUCH A GENERALISED STATEMENT PLEASE. Sheer naivity - sorry 2 offend.

6th / 7th of Jan - all downloads timeout.

Tucows.co.za - 41 sec to load home page.

Download.com - 35 sec to load home page.

Telkom support pass me on but 15 min later no-one has answered. Phone again to get different technical support and am passed on again... still waiting.

Do not mislead people browsing this forum as to the possibility (in the near future anyway) of this service being in any way painfree.

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 0.016 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 255000 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 31250 (kiloBytes/second)

Actually, maybe you're right... for me to download a 500k file in 0.016 secs is pretty impressive. If you want to ever boast to UK / US residents about our connectivity - send them to this link. Tech support just asked me to use it to diagnose my lack of bandwidth. What a thoroughly Telkom offering.

Your browser cached it. To quote the Telkom site:
Important Note: Your browser will cache the file the first time you download it. To download it again you might have to press and hold CTRL while clicking on reload. This should give you an accurate download speed.

What's painfree? The international latency is terrible, in other words its back to being as slow as usual. Latency to the UK is now more than double what it was last week.

Mine isn't cashed, however, I made sure of that. (Sorry I couldn't resist.) [:p]

Pretty accurate. (8.5mb tested, 10mb actual)
