Greetings all, i have been avidly following all the threads concerning adsl and iburst for the last couple of weeks. As i am a firm hater of hellkom, I am looking to get iburst. What i'd like to know, seriously, is whether iburst is worth it... i'm looking for highspeed for video confrencing. and the price seems decent. The cap... i can survive as long as local downloads don't run up the international cap...

So what do you all think?

BTW to any wbs people reading this, Andrew the guy your helpdesk told me to contact to get iburst in pretoria hasn't answered his phone all day and hasn't returned my calls.... I don't mind since i don't know who he is. But i think you guys should look into it...

iBurst doesnt distinguish between local and international traffic when it comes to counting up to your cap. All traffic counts towards your cap as per their last product description.

If you do get iBurst get it month-to-month so you can bail if it tanks.

yeah i was thinking about that. But my conflict comes in when i think about the launch... I would rather take the contract to be safe from price increases post launch... But i guess month to month for now should be fine... I've read a lot of bad sides to the service on this site. But all my friends in pta that have so far had no real complaints... Odd connection spike but thats about it....
I would much prefer the cap be higher, or at least that local downloads not affect it, but i guess we'll see post launch...

P.s. Would it be possible to sell the modem if wbs tanks?

I think your problem could be that you want to use it for video conferencing, while the speed of the connection is a maximum of 1Mbits/s (when you have decent upload & 100% download signal, and the WBS gremlins aren't at work), your problem could be latency - as high as a junkie. I would really like to know what WBS intend to do about the latency problem - especially if the iBurst service grows to the WBS target of 15000 customers by Q4 of 2005. All I see is a lot of contention & consequently increased latency...

That said, I suggest taking hArTh's advice & definitely abuse a friend's iBurst to test video conferencing etc etc etc.

lol, yeah maybe. Well i'm meeting the guy tomorrow if he bloody returns my calls, useless sod... But yeah, we'll see what happens. I'll report back tomorrow night or when i finish setting up my modem ;P

Thanks guys :D

THERE IS NO CAP RIGHT NOW

as far as iBurst is concerned, the technology is good, and when it works it beats the pants off adsl and sentech put together, the problem is we're still in the softlaunch period so we don't know if it will be good or bad when tons of users are hitting the system. But for stuff liek video conferencing iBurst is good since video conferencing is done with UDP which is connectionless so it doesn't matter if some data gets lost along the way but for other potential iBurst customers reading this... don't get it if you are wanting to play online games alot

Yeah true, well the only online games i'm going to play if they hang around long enough is going to be Neocron, and maybe Everquest... :D Both brilliant games btw ;)

We'll see how it goes... Maybe we should send in a petition concerning the local capping of bandwidth, cause i don't "really" mind the int'l cap, but come on. I can get so much locally... And i'm already bouncing my gmail ;P
But hey lets see what they say. Report back tonight *Salutes*

DOWN WITH HelLKOM!!!
CENSORSHIP SUCKS!!!!

Pretoria coverage

You should be aware that as of yesterday, only two towers are operational in Pretoria, no matter what the WBS coverage maps say. More than half of the town is still in iB darkness.

Nonsense. iBurst doesnt offer sub 20 ms pings with zero loss over gigabyte sized data transfers. ADSL will ALWAYS be more stable and reliable than wireless based coms.

8321, see you're in the east. As I've said before, if WBS can utilise some of the existing structures on top of the Menlo "koppie" (already populated by SABC, Sentech, etc.) I'm sure they can cover the whole east

interesting, i've just read the product description again, anything except mail/web/streaming and vpn would be throttled to 64kb

Thats nice isn't it... now what if I want to do something other than the norm with my 1 meg "broadband" connection... I might as well install myself a 128k isdn line... worse yet, I think I'll move to an area where it's not so difficult into getting ADSL, and jump on the uncapped UUNET thing. At least they won't shape the traffic to f@ckall if you decide to download porn on port 666...

well, hope there won't be shaping involved... have to see now will i?

well no matter what they do you will moan and whine abotu something

adsl only offers sub 20 ms pings in close proximity, its a well known fact the service deteriorates over distance, and I was saying its better more along the lines of speed.

Not really, after you pointed to some of my misc posts I made (in other threads, then accuse me of being skitzo, which is none of your gawd damn business), I went ahead and went to their website for the product description again. On there, it does say that during the course of the soft launch, they will implement a throttle to 64k on everything except web/mail/vpn and streaming. THUS, proving that caps on torrents (I forget, you're a proxy *** who leeches off everyone else, ex-adsl user?) have in fact been implemented and that is the reason why I don't get speed.

Now, I suggest you keep your idle comments to yourself, everyone already knows my **** is bigger than yours, and I'm seriously not in the mood to prove it to every n00b that joins this forum "in participation" because "my connection is down, boodiedoodaahie"

what's that? (I mean the eyesore not CSIR)
A tall concrete telecomms tower with a steel topknot. Visible almost everywhere in the East.

Another Neocron player i thought i was the only one the the country :D :D
Ive being playing Neocron with iburst and my ping is alot better that with isdn 128K, i get a ping of about 250-300 atm.

btw i calculated the down/up load of neocron over a period of 1 hour without any other applications running (if you run teamspeak) it eats alot more..and worked out that you should be able to play for 16 days 24/7 to use your 3 gig cap per month.

cheers m8 see you on-line terra headhunter/mystic monkey/super tank/brute force....
