Hope this is the last time I am going to bother you. I have installed my new disc, a 160 GB SATA II, partitioned it and load my OS, Windows XP. My old drive, 40GB ATA is still in a good condition and can be used. What would happen if I install my old drive just as it is together with the new one to transfer files, settings, etc? If that would not work, what changes should I make in the BIOS to make it work? I've made a disc with XP's transfer setting wizard that I can use but I am just curious to know if there is not a better way. Thanx so much for your advice, it is really appreciated and I think all of us learn a little bit as time goes on, even the Masters. Have a nice day.

OK - I've wondered about this. If your boot disk is a SATA drive do you still need to set master/slave on a standard ATA drive?All you need to do is set the jumpers on the back of the old 40gb to slave connect it up and you good to go. it will let you know on the hdd which pins to put the jumper on.

In the bios you will have a option to choose which hdd must boot first.
Works like a charm. I have a 320Gb SataII + 2x 200Gb ata + 20Gb ATA drives in my pc.

master slave issues only occur in ide mode when more than one IDE device is present.
if you have a sata drive, and an ide drive, then the ide drive is master, as it would be the only device on that ide channel..sata drives dont come into the picture...
summary: one ide device=set it to master, irrespective of the presence of sata drives. more than one ide device, then obey the master/slave rules (irrespective of the presence or lack thereof of sata devices)

changed which drive i boot from in my bios.
have 1 x 250GB sata II and 2 x 120GB ide drives. Had windows on one of the ide drives, changed in the bios running everything from my sata now, both ide drives just for storage.
