I have an old Acer aspire 5742g and I want to upgrade the RAM on it. The laptop came with win7 but I want to upgrade to win10.
This is the link :- Datasheet PN: LX.R5301.014
I have already ordered the SSD from takealot (link), thanks to a R200 takealot voucher I got it for R279. Now I want to upgrade the RAM.
My question is the datasheet page on the acer website says it's upgradable to 8Gb and the following
Memory Technology DDR3 SDRAM
Memory Standard DDR3-1066/PC3-8500
What RAM I need to look for ? does 1066 mean the frequency of the ram

will any of these work with the above laptop ??
[Sale] - 4GB DDR3 PC3L 1600 SODIMM (Micron, Samsung,ADATA, Kingston) Mix 6x | Memory / RAM
[Sale] - Avexir Blitz1.1 4GB x2 DDR3 | Memory / RAM

Second link is desktop ram.

First link might work.

You need to check what's currently in the laptop, it might have 2x 2gb sticks in which case you would have to replace both with 2x 4gb

According to https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Acer/aspire-5742g DDR3L-1600 will work
The second link is also for laptop. If u open the link and then check the link in the classified, u will see it's for laptop memory.
Currently there is one 1gb and one 2gb in the laptop. So yes I think I will need 2x 4gb

No it's not, it's desktop ram.

The category is "Desktop Memory" and if you further google the part# "AVD3U21330904G-2BZ1" it will be desktop ram

Also check the voltage of ram as I suspect your laptop might require low voltage ram DDR3L, just double check.

lol, yes u are right. I think I got confused because the name of the website "laptop direct" appears on the link and on the images of the RAm

Normally the best scenario is to just buy the same model and add that but it seems somebody already tried to upgrade it and you'll have to replace. So you can add any compatible model. Also Win10 is barely advisable for newer laptops let alone older ones.

It's an old laptop which I plan to giveaway to a relative. Dont have money for new spares so looking for cheapest possible way to upgrade.

he is 13 years old. I doubt he will like that.

Have a look at a kid friendly Linux(MX Linux is lightweight and very user friendly). I highly doubt he will be gaming on it?

Do you know what his interests are, it may be springboard into tech for him/her...

no he is not into computer games AFAIK. normally goes out to play soccer. I was just talking to him and his father at a family function where they mentioned they are looking for a cheap laptop for his studies, I said I have an old one which I can upgrade and would be happy to give it to him.

Have a look at Linux as a serious option - You will not need to fight to get MS Office or anything, it comes fully loaded with Libre Office, it is light weight, fast, reliable(If you do not tinker with it, try to use your RAM as a mounted storage device(you can do this))

It is also completely free. If you need support, feel free to ask for help here. I have once or twice.

I use Ubuntu every day. I have slimmed down the OS a bit, soI only need about 930MB to run Linux and my normal day to day apps. The rest I can burn and make RAM disks....

thats really expensive. wont fit my budget. Looking for something cheap that will fit in R500 budget. I do have another R200 takealot voucher.

Keep looking around, bottom line is you can get any memory speed above 1066 as long as its 1.5V

Download CPUz on the laptop and see under SPD what the voltage of the current RAM is, maybe you get lucky and its 1.35V

Doubt you'll find 8GB for that. Perhaps go for 4GB to replace the 1GB stick.
