I'm considering upgrading the memory of my old P4/Asrock P4VM8 rig to use as a database server. The manual says the following about its memory slots

2 DDR DIMM Slots: DDR1 and DDR2
1 DDR DIMM Slot Supports PC3200 (DDR400), Max. 1GB,
2 DDR DIMM Slots Supports PC2700 (DDR333) /
PC2100 (DDR266), Max. 2GB

I'd like to pump it up to 2GB, but does this mean I can only slot in either 1 x 1GB DDR400 or 2 x 1GB DDR333?

In other words, if I want 2GB I'll have to go with 2 x 1GB DR333 modules instead of DDR400?

I think it means you have to go 1GB of DDRI and 1GB of DDRII to get 2GB max.

Unless they are just labeling the memory slots DDR1 and DDR2 which is unusuall as they are normally DIMM1, DIMM2 etc.

2X 1GB DDR400 will work fine to give you 2GB in total ;)
MB bios will detect the memory module(s) inserted and assigns the appropriate frequency for DRAM.

Correct Drake - the slot are marked like that....the board does not support DDR2 modules

It looks like you're interpreting it correctly. If the motherboard has 2 slots, I don't see any other way of interpreting it.

It's probably a weak memory controller or something in that line, only able to manage one slot at full speed.

PS. You can use 2 ddr400 ram sticks though and it will get slowed to ddr333 if the motherboard can't handle....as said above.

Hit it with a hammer a few times and hear what it says

Otherwise, what CPU you got in there?

My bad, DDRII start at 5300 - excuse the slight confusion.
