So I recently purchased Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (me and some mates used to have epic lan fun with this game!) through Origin for R99.95 (expansions included) but just want to know if it, being an old game, will run on Windows 10.

I know from experience that trying to install old games from disks usually doesn't work but was wondering if when they're made available through these online portals, they are downloaded and installed with 'fixes' that will make them playable on newer operating systems.

If it doesn't work, it's not the end of the world. I just don't want to go eat unnecessarily into my cap downloading the game, only to find it doesn't work.

It should be fine.

When you buy games on Steam or Origin, you're not getting the original installer so no 16 bit crap. And if the game itself is 16 bit or uses some obscure engine that won't work in modern Windows (like Grim Fandango), they release a patched or re-mastered version.

There is 1 exception to this rule I know of - the King's Quest Collection. Didn't work on Windows 8 and still doesn't work on 10. Steam support seems to give zero ****s as the issues have just never been addressed.

For older games look at www.gog.com

They make sure things work on newer platforms & remove drm. They do some really good work & I like supporting them.

Steam, origin and gog rewrite the game's code to work within wrappers for dx9,10,11,12 etc so they should work fine on newer OSes

GOG are great with refunds if you have issues running a game. And of course their stuff is DRM free, and often includes bonus content. I generally prefer buying games on GOG, unless there's a multiplayer component.

Some games do also have a remastered version eg Grim Fandango

Bought Pagan Ultima VIII through GOG. Excellent platform for buying the classics. Didn't even consider GOG when it came to buying MOHAA to be honest.

Actually own the MOHAA warchest purchased from GOG myself. Pity they don't have Pacific Assault
