So these are officially supported:

I don't want virtual anything - just pure linux. So which one would you pick?
Suse / RH?

I'm not a particular big fan of each. It's going to be pure shell and will run Tomcat, PostgreSQL and Java web apps.
It ran Ubuntu 12.04 LTS beautifully but gave grief with 16.04 LTS - something majorly wrong when restoring a 600Gb PG dump takes 48 hours.

How about CentOS 6, since RHEL 6 is on the list? It is supported up to 2020 with critical security updates. SL6 may be another alternative.

SuSE is very stable - pity you can't run Debian, which is a great server operating system

Good spot. I'll probably give CentOS a go. I've used it before. Cheers.

+1 for CentOS.

CentOS 7.

Just popping in to say thanks for the pointers - CentOS 7 was a win. Took some getting used to especially with where things are, the firewall, etc. but it's solid as a rock. Had a speed wobble when changing partitions on one drive - emergency mode kept booting, but used grubby to remove references to old partitions and problem solved.
