Older semi pro vs newer budget

Would it better to get - for example - an older 40D over a new 550D? New vs old technology?

Depends on, what features do you value more? Ergonomics? Weather sealing? High framerate? Better Auto focus? Capabilities of the newer sensor? Higher ISO? Video?

I actually wanted to get a 7D in June to take a photo of a band at Barnyard - but they've brough their show forward ... And I can't spend R15k on a body now.

Want the best body for that task - so high ISO, good low light and sharp?

550D then. The 40D is an awesome camera, but it doesn't match the low light/high ISO abilities of the new 18mp sensor.
