Hey peepz, i dont know exactly when the OLED tv's are coming out but apparently they are going to be better than LCD. Was just wondering if someone knows more about OLED and the release date and if it would be wise to purchase a LCD HD in this year still knowing OLED is expected.

OLED generally will have a wider colour gamut and better contrast. However, you can already have that and in full HD with a plasma TV.

They are going to be very expensive, probably 5 years before we see one around R10000.

At least 5 years... if not closer to 10years.

OLED is a great technology, its just nowhere near commercial viability yet

To my understanding, LCD have a longer life than plasma though??

I think the operating hours quoted on current sets are equal across the board.
You'll replace your set for other reasons - eg buy a bigger TV with better resolution long before the picture degrades to any noticeable levels.

For some reason 2 me a FUll HD LCD tv has a sharper and more brilliant image quality than a full hd plasma, irrespective of the brand but yet some people would rather go for plasma. Why is that? Am i missing something?

Which HD plasma did you compare against which LCD?

The LCDs I've seen all have motion blur/ghosting (Sony high end bravia), unnatural colours and even angle issues - at extreme angles the colours change. Full HD plasma at this stage has the best contrast available - as you can see the reviews of the Panasonic powered Pioneer Kuro display - the blacks are so black that when they powered the TV on in dark room they couldn't
see any light behind the black areas. I guess if you look at a cheaper plasma from HiSense or Sonic and you compare that picture to a much more
expensive LCD you may ask your question but look at good Japanese plasma
makes and not cheaper knock-offs.

I also have an extended color gamut 30 inch display here, it's 2560by1600 ie
a 4 megapixel display and the picture is great too, but I'd still go with a plasma. The new "Laser" display technology is something which may bypass OLED displays completely as it offers lower power draw and extended colour gamut and contrast too at full HD and above resolutions.

This is currently the best rated Plasma around. It has a Panasonic panel.
$5,500 USD.

(I should also add that it's overall rated as the best HDTV ever, over LCDs and OLED displays too). ;)

Note also that they say the contrast is 1:37000 not Sony's 1:1000,000 but also note that they say that this is the
limit of their professional measuring equipment. Sony must have some amazing measuring equipment there or
their 1:1 000 000 contrast ratio has been sucked out of their thumbs.

This LCD vs Plasma TV decision has been driving me nuts. You guys seem to know quite a bit about this field. OLED would of course be nice but my budget is R10k-R12k and I want to buy a TV within about the next 2 months.

What would be the best option to choose for bang for your buck in that price range? Im looking at 37" or bigger.

Ok so if i were to buy a TV, The Samsung LA46A550 (Full HD 1080p) from Makro for R21 999, the Sony KLV-40S400 (Full HD 1080p) for R12 999 or a FULL HD PLASMA in the same league as these two. Which one would i go for and why?

I cant seem to choose between LCD or PLASMA, wheneva i go test the 2, the plasma gives a lot of glare and is not as sharp as the LCD, esp in gaming and animated movies. Never tested blueray yet.

I would guess that you don't need 1080p for 37"-42". Have a look at 720p in the 42" ranges, very decent prices atm.

If you're looking at spending R10-R12k, look at Sinotech... decent prices and they're good screens
