Olivedale Base-Station & Skype

Pings down to under 100ms - 77ms average, pretty damn good too. But I guess that's because I'm very close to tower, so signal doesn't travel far thru the air.

The highest speed I have had now on Olivedale-BS is 18.8KBytes/s @ 04:00 this morning, but it's waaay better than what I had on Bryanston-BS.

The problem is that I'm right on the edge of Olivedale-BS coverage according to the coverage map - it is hard to tell whether I'm in or out of coverage as it goes from dark green to zilch in a flash on that map. It's not what I had in November & December but it is still a vast improvement over Bryanston-BS.

Latency & packet loss - seems to be more stable but I have not been running the background ping [only just started it up now] so I cannot comment on that yet :).
Code:
Ping statistics for 196.30.31.120:
    Packets: Sent = 63, Received = 63, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 80ms, Maximum =  451ms, Average =  164ms
Control-Break

ic - I'm also probably on Olivedale now - seeing much improvement. The Wet-11 might actually degrade your signal if it's strong enough so perhaps try without it. If you have an active USB hub, you can put it in the middle and get 10m. Ethernet will of course give you up to 100m. I want to start work on a combination iBurst/WiFi rooftop box with power over ethernet ala Jawug - anyone keen?

Irrespective of what the iBurst site says, I think that the Olivedale BS is not allive yet

I stay about 400m from Bahai, down Bellairs Drive and have direct line of site to Bahai.

I have been monitoring for the last three days my UTD and nothing changed - it stays at 3 bars when not transmitting and it has been like that for the last 2 months, presumably connected to Bryanston BS.

My Telkom dls speedtest is +/- 180 Kbps - I've never seen the 1024 Kbps that you guys are talking about...

So I think that iBurts are bull****ing us about this like they bull****ed us for so many other thinks - Shaun Green, do you hear?

If I'm preaching to the converted then please excuse me, you do not need to have your iBurst UTD's own antenna pointing straight upwards, you can angle it towards the base-station if there's a slope between UTD and base-station.

I am in a dip in relation to Bryanston-BS, and I found I got a better signal with the UTD antenna on a slight angle, and with the wet-11 concentrating the signal in the direction of Bryanston-BS.

I imagine the same sort of thing should work if you are 400m away from Olivedale-BS (i.e. maybe the base-station signal overshoots you, or your UTD's upload signal doesn't get there).

Olivedale-BS is definitely live though - it has not been given a name yet on the WBS system (no not the Network Status page - the system the Helpdesk people have access to), but it is definitely live.

I had already repositioned my UTD specifically for Olivedale-BS as soon as I realised it was live - I stacked up a bunch of books on the windowsill & put the UTD on top ;).

If USB cables weren't limited to 5m in length I would attach via USB & look at FER% etc.

I seriously think it might be the UTD not sending out a strong enough upload signal to the BS - BTW I have my wet-11 in place [the external patch antenna is a problem to suspend in the air - need to develop some dormant telekenesis abilities]...

On Monday I will have to start taking prisoners until I get a commitment that someone will come out & analyze signal & swap-out the UTD...

IC... is there perhaps not something worng with your modem.. it's just so weird that you cant get a good signal or speed.

Well that's the exact same question I asked Luis back in January, and have done many times since, the prevailing opinion from WBS was no, although I have yet to get any concrete info other than MTU must be x or y or z, and from 3 different sources Bryanston-BS' coverage was extended over my head.

All I can say is Olivedale-BS is so far much better for me than Bryanston-BS has been since January.

Methinks I will call either Shaun or Sasan & convince them that they need to send someone out to test THEIR airwaves and preferably do a UTD swapout at the same time - if that still lands me with max 20KBytes/s then I will either grin & bear it, or wait another millenium for Telkomonopoly to ponder over that ADSL application.

The fact is that iBurst is now finally usable with Olivedale-BS (I need to verify that Skype is now usable though), I should be able to stop ripping hair from my scalp...:D

not if you dont make calls, thats liek saying oh man downloading for 8 hours at 1mbit is a bandwith muncher.. duh

Well I was under the impression that Skype's dynamic routing & P2P did use bandwidth whether you make a call or not - just having it open would allow other Skype peers to route through your connection, if not then great.

depends if you pay or not, if you pay you can get direct access to a server and of course you can always shape skype to give no more than 0.01KB/s

Slimothy, if you're talking about SkypeOut and/or SkypeIn, then please post the source of your info - I haven't seen anything on Skype.com that says traffic is different if you have/haven't purchased SkypeIn or SkypeOut credits.

What I have seen in the Skype.com FAQz is that bandwidth consumption is based entirely on the quality of your connection & how much can be transferred, also this seems to be dynamically adjusted whilst a call is in progress, according to latency & throughput.

ok for the 8th time, i'm not your google :p
Touchy touchy, I am quite happy with the original Google service and will not be considering any alternative service offerings in the near future - thanks but no thanks :p :D.

I was merely asking you to backup your info with fact bcos I have not seen any info that suggests Skype generates any more or less traffic based on whether you have/have not spent money on SkypeOut, SkypeIn, SkypePhone, or anything else bought from their online store ;).

This thread has run its course & nearing death...

apparently you CANNOT buy lesbians from SKYPE's online store but you can speak to lesbains with SKYPE...

er... nevermind.
LOL, ok but if you could buy a lesbian from the Skype store, would the purchase cause Skype to generate more or less VoIP traffic...:p

*my mind boggles at possible replies*
