This thread is dedicated to anyone at WBS that supplies a definite answer to this question:

When will Olivedale base-station go live?

I am hoping it will be 28/03/05 (i.e. today) as stated on http://www.iburst.co.za/rollout.php, but I would like to know if I am needlessly waiting for it to go live today ;) - just let me know one way or another.

Thanks.

There will be an olivedale basestation....? Where exactly? Edit: Ok got it, I wonder if it will interfere with the Bryanston BS. That tower is a few hundred meters from me but no direct LOS. Got LOS on Bryanston BS.

I sure as hell wouldn't roll out a tower on a Public Holiday. But thats me. I'm as lazy as sin :p

Someone at Iburst doesn't look at the calendar and check the public holidays :p :p :p

I bet you'l hate when you discover that they install tillted-up antenna, that makes 250m radius shadow!

Doesn't appear to be live yet, and it also doesn't look like I will be covered if it's where I think it is (as opposed to what the coverage map says) :(.

Did you get my PM?

For everyone else, attached is the map with position of Bahai Centre in Northriding. BC stands for Banbury Cross, Northgate Mall will be to the left, following Olivienhout.

Yep, I got your pm (thanks :)), the thing is I've realised that Olivedale-BS is not going to give me LOS due to topography.

Anyway the only way to find out for sure is for Olivedale-BS to go live & then I will give it a go with either the WET-11 or patch panel & see how if I can get a signal from & to it.

Looking at the coverage maps, it looks like they are planning a base station at Hyde Park corner (I imagine on top of the Shopping Centre.) This would be only 800m away from me with LOS. It will be interesting, though, because it is actually at a lower altitude. This should cover those in the Hyde Park river valley, and most of Craighall/Hurlingham... I was hoping they would put one on the Illovo Water Tower... But I can't complain. Is it my imagination or has that Jhb BS list mushroomed in the last two weeks?

Fast rollout is one thing WBS are doing well :).

Hi all..

Olivdale will be live by the end of Friday.

Cheers

Shaun

Hope so. My connection, after initial 2 days of bliss, had been really choppy for the last 6 days. D/L speeds, 15-20KB at the most ...

ClockWorkBorange, did you call in to support to log a complaint yet? If you don't you have no one to blame but yourself

Olivedale is now live according to the iBurst.co.za network status page :).

Good news: I am now getting constant 5 UTD signal strength leds - does not waver - yet :). So far I have not needed to run the continuous background ping with Olivedale-BS :).

Bad news: Speed is still kablooey - so I think this is a good enough reason/motivation for Sasan to send Emil or whoever out to analyze the situation & perhaps he can bring another UTD to swap out if mine is faulty (would be nice if there was some iBurst diagnostic s/w to run low level tests).

find your sweet spot, if they add a new tower it changes
I had already repositioned my UTD specifically for Olivedale-BS as soon as I realised it was live - I stacked up a bunch of books on the windowsill & put the UTD on top ;).

If USB cables weren't limited to 5m in length I would attach via USB & look at FER% etc.

I seriously think it might be the UTD not sending out a strong enough upload signal to the BS - BTW I have my wet-11 in place [the external patch antenna is a problem to suspend in the air - need to develop some dormant telekenesis abilities]...

On Monday I will have to start taking prisoners until I get a commitment that someone will come out & analyze signal & swap-out the UTD...

It's definitely live now, although last night I could not connect at all - I think the tower was up and signal was there, so it overshadowed signals from any other towers, but the base station was not connected to the system.

But now, Sat morning, everything is absolutely flying, I have 5 green dots all the time, and browsing is lightning fast. Going to the doctor now, but will test downloads later. So far huge improvement :D
