Oly E620?

Well, bigger sensors generally give better high-ISO/low light performance, but other than that, no. It comes down to personal preference. I'd like to see more reviews on the lenses.
I've got some bookmarked at home, I'll see if I can find them tonight. The sensor performance though is really starting to improve as things get better, IMHO its almost on par (or getting close) with the older, and bigger sensors of 3-5 years ago

I did find this though which I think explains a lot of what we have been discussing.

PMA interview with Oly: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0903/09032002olympusinterview.asp

Its made my itch for the E620 turn into a really big want! Of course I wouldn't mind one of the "bigger" pro Camera's But I need to be realistic with what I can afford and what is best to offer in that range. Now if only SARS will hurry up and send me the 14k they owe me

BTW, I checked it out on Monday. I has the tiniest viewfinder I have ever seen on a (D)SLR. Unfortunately, they didn't have the bigger Oly models in the shop for comparison, but I can tell you it's significantly smaller than the ones on the Nikon D40 and Canon 1000D. They had a Pentax K2000 too, but a couple was ooh-ing and aah-ing over it and I was running out of time, so I didn't get a chance to look at it.

I caved in :) mine is sitting in customs at the moment. Soon as they release it, I'll see.

I checked thats its almost the same size as the OM1 that I am used to, so hoping it will be ok. Though saying that, The OM1 only has a light meter, not 30 other things you need to see as well.

Soon as I have it, I'll be doing some comparison shoots with it and my wifes Canon

My wifes Canon 400D :) Otherwise I still use the OM1, which to be honest has been sitting in the cupboard for months.

I have a point an shoot that I use for underwater photography, but thats also been stashed away as I have been diving for months either.

Cant wait for it to arrive. I ordered the E620 with dual kit lens (14-42mm and 40-150mm), Ex25 Extension tube, Raynox 2.5x Macro lens (after seeing images from somebody else I know using one), 32gb flash card, and a Oly Carry bag.

Well seems it has been cleared out of custom, and did arrive, but nobody was home. Even though they admit they had my phone number.

They also cant tell me when it will arrive tomorrow, so I have to go collect it from EMS in JHB. I hate our post office!

Waiting for the battery to charge, I feel like a little kid with new toys.

I do see what you mean about the view finder though, Will take some getting used to.

I don't know why they don't just crank up the magnification on the crop bodies so they give the same size image as a film body. Sure, the body would look kinda awkward, but I'm sure we'd get used to it. Also, why do they make viewfinders that don't have 100% coverage? That's just silly, and inexcusable on bodies that cost this much money. Pentax just released a new body with a Pentaprism and 100% coverage, so it can be done.

I was messing around outside the office quickly. These are with the 14-42 kit lens, and the EX25 extension tube.

Congrats Boet!

Now comes the time of fasting so you can afford the extra bits:
flash
100-300
bigger bag
...

Enjoy it, I recall how long you've waiting to do this! :)

My wife reminded me last night... Its been almost 6 years since I started whining in her ears about wanting to buy a decent Camera :) For my Birthday this year in jan.. everyone gave me cash with notes saying.. Buy that stupid camera already! Thanks to them and SARS finally paying me. Its happened!

The 40-150mm I have now though is the same as her 80-300 (at least compared to 35mm film. They actually supplied stickers to put on the lenses to give the 35mm equivalents.. Which I kindly threw away.)

I did also buy a bigger bag though with this purchase. But Flash and Wide angle are already bugging me. Oh and also the converter for all my old glass.

You do know however that you are fully to blame for me getting all the macro equipment first :D

I know the topic was more about the E620 before it became more 4/3rds in general. I would say that if I was going to buy into the 4/3rds thinking it wouldnt be with any of the Oly bodies, it would actually be with the new micro 4/3rd Panasonic G1, same size 4/3rds sensor but in a body that really is smaller and lighter than anything else on the market.

Wow. Well congrats dude! get some flickr and pics going! :D
I plan to try :) My current flickr account is pretty much empty. I have kept it for the decent pics I have taken over the years... so yeah.. thats why its empty. My Photobucket account though has a number of different folders of the crap I have been shooting.

First on the list is to finally sit down and take some photo's of my Tarantula's I own. I hope to have them up soon..

And why not the M4/3rds Oly bodies? is there any reason why the new M4/3rds they have brought out are any different. Especially considering the fact that the whole idea behind 4/3rds (or M4/3rds, for that matter), is that you can exchange all the lenses (at least between the respective standards)?

Reading the article I posted above with the interview with the Oly staff though, They were asked if due to the release of their new M4/3rds body, would they be giving up on the standard 4/3rds system. To which they said, No, But while they were spending more on the R&D for Micro system, one needed to understand that many of the things developed for the micro, would be able to be used in the standard system. Especially since things had to be made much smaller to fit into the bodies, It was actually a bonus for the standard models, and the E620 had some parts developed from that research

..

..
I know I am what many would call an Oly fanbois. But I also appreciate the Canons, and Nikons, and I wouldn't mind one of each in my bag, But I just cant afford that. What is funny though is I have recently read through some posts from 4 years ago where people laughed and said the 4/3rds would never work and was doomed to die... Well, its 4 years later, and is still going. There are still arguements about it though, Except now they are about if it will actually over take the current market or not. Personally I dont think it will, More so because the current user base is to big.

Regardless, I am very happy so far, and Hope to post some reference material in the next few days

My #1 recommendation for macro is a flash - you need to use a smaller aperture. Best would be a TTL flash for your camera. [then you're going to want a flash bracket and off-shoe cable, then an equivalent to Canon's twinflash (on my want list), then you'll decide the extension tubes are not enough and need a macro lens, then ... :D]

I've already noticed the flash part, and its already on my wish list. And so is this already https://emporium.olympus.com/innards/empProdDetails.asp?sku=260121-410 LOL. I tried quiet a bit last night with other lighting sources and who knows what. but just couldn't get enough.

I really dont understand why Flashes are so damn expensive though. I have to flashes for my OM1 that still work perfectly, But they dont work with the E620 :(

PS: Who invented TTL flashs :D

For macro, this is the one: ;)

Of course, such external sensors were easily fooled. The sensor might, for example, cover more or less area than the lens currently in use. So Olympus pioneered through-the-lens flash metering in the mid 1970s with the OM2. Canon introduced their version of TTL flash metering with the T90 a decade later, then incorporated the feature as standard with the EOS line of film cameras. It’s for this reason that the Canon T90 is the only non-EOS camera capable of using Canon’s TTL flash metering system.

http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/#ttl

;)

BTW, my Minolta X700 cameras also used TTL flash metering (early 80s) ;)

As I understand it, the biggest problem with the older flashes is the trigger voltage. You could end up damaging the circuitry of the camera, so unless it's made specifically by Oly for the purpose you want, I would be wary :(
