Omni versus directional antennas

I know the topic has been discussed before, but would like to hear of people who have actually used but omni and directional antennas for iBurst. Ideal would be if both cases were outdoor antennas in similar or same position with gains around 8-12 dBi for both.

Please also indicate which antennas (even rough discription will help), whether you could see the base station (line of sight) and how far the base station was away.

I tried an omni but it did not work too well for me. I put up a directional on a pole outside the house as high as I could get it, and used my GPS to get the tower direction (Iburst did not want to give the info). It works fine 90% of the time giving me average 80% reception with very low error rates. Because of my distance to the tower weather influences it sometimes - high air moisture such as rain/electrical storms seems to affect it badly increasing the error rates and dropping the connection strength.

The directional antenna seems to be more height oriented as directional. At the height I have it (~3m off ground) I can turn it 90 deg off direction without much connection loss. If I had a longer antenna cable I could go up to 5m.

Get a Yagi and your issue will be resolved - the products iBurst sells are not of a high quality only high mark-up...
