The two standout things are seeing James Gordon & Bruce Waynes evolution as people. They pretty much nailed both those characters imo and it's a pleasure to watch. I don't really have much investment in any of the criminals yet. Carmine Falcone was pretty cool, Fish is annoying. Penguin is brilliant in the role, but I still find him somewhat annoying. Gordons partner Bullock is cool, Gordons girlfriend is annoying as **** and I don't know why they bother with her storyline. Gotham also looks amazing in HD .

Edit: Oh and Alfreds relationship with Bruce - also cool. Another standout character in the show.
