Traditional leaders and authorities are on the hunt for a notorious illegal traditional surgeon as the numbers of deaths of initiates continues to rise in the Eastern Cape.

Mshiyelwa Ndoda, known as Mtshayina, is believed to be on the run after provincial initiation monitoring teams found 63 initiates in Mgwenyane village in Libode, in the east of the province, who had been circumcised illegally.

Of those, 61 were aged between nine and 17 years. It is illegal for any child under the age of 18 to undergo customary male initiation.

Mgwenyane village is not far from Ndoda’s home in Zele village, Libode. Most of the initiates who have died this season come from the area.

I'm surprised by this, since time immemorial circumcision school has always been mostly for those under 18 years including primary school going kids. It was never for men. Or maybe it's different in the southern parts of the country as opposed to the northern parts.

Exactly, I still remember in primary school, we would go on holiday and some would never come back. But then again in those days we had 18 year olds in primary school.

I hear what you mean but there were even absolute toddlers who would go to 'the mountain'.

Backwards cultures, doing backwards things.
To be fair people have their genitals of their sons maimed in private hospitals, paid for by private medical aid. It is strange to me that we need laws to curb this.

That is somewhat different than "going to the mountain". Wouldn't you say?

This is the typical age group in the northern parts of the country, not over 18s.

what the hell is a traditional "traditional surgeon" ?

Someone who has decolonised medicine and proudly rejects Western Imperialism in their practice, thus evil things like bacteria simply don't exist.

It only makes sense if they barred the practice entirely for anyone under the age of 18.

Just as bad. ALL medical procedures should be performed by professionals in hospitals, etc.

I actually don't care who performs said procedure or what said procedure involves (be it the teeth of a rabbi, a 20 year old razor or a sterile scalpel) . What matters is that the patient should be able to consent to the procedure, and given how it affects the rest of your life and is entirely unnecessary the age of said consent should be 18.
