Hi there... We are putting in an offer to buy a new car and I have read on the forum about this fee.
They want us to sign a form where they add an 'on the road fee' of R3100 AND an additional fee of R500 for license and registration. From what I understand, L&R should form part of the 'on the road fee', or am I mistaken?
We really don't want to be taken for a ride here, so any help would be appreciated!!!

(I have sent an email requesting a breakdown of this fee... but any 'foreknowledge would help, as we don't want to look like total amateurs)

Yes it should be included.

What car are you buying? If its something in demand with a waiting list they might not budge but if its something freely available you should be able to negotiate it away completely or get a lot of extras.

"on the road" fee usually includes:
  • licencing and registration
  • Number plates
  • Pre-delivery inspection
  • Autoamour or similar glazing
  • Window smash and grab/tint
  • Full tank / 10L fuel
  • Mats
  • Emergency "gift" pack
  • Profit

Ask for a break down of exactly what it includes with individual pricing, it is negotiable usually, if they don't want to budge simply go to another branch unless you've been on a long waiting list.

What vehicle are you buying,

Negotiate the fee down.. they're just loading it with stuff you don't need.

It usually includes nothing except registration and license until you ask for a break down.mi still think this behavior is a case for the advertising authority.

Thanks everyone. I got a reply... with no breakdown, but with the promise of 'tweaking' this fee once the bank has authorised our car loan. I truly believe that to be fore-armed is good, so I will be taking all your advice with me when we go to see the dealer. We are looking into a Renault Clio, and are already paying quite a decent amount for the car, so when they came with the 'on the road fee' AND a 'licensing fee' I thought something was a little fishy.
Now we can be 'hardegat' with the guy ;)

and in other advice... don't buy a renault

Hmmm, I would be telling the dealer to sort it out now before the bank "authorises" the loan.

I agree, this has got nothing to do with the bank loan, so they should be able to give you an answer immediately. Depending on the breakdown, it may be worth it. Otherwise it is a rip off. Also, you could just register the car yourself.

Definitely try negotiate it down, i just bought a car about a month ago and manged to negotiate it down from R3500 to R1750.

Or any French car for that matter

French make good food and clothes....terrible cars
Germans make terrible food and clothes....good cars
British make good cops...terrible food, clothes and cars
Italians make good clothes, nice looking cars....terrible cops

Please please tell me where you bought a car with all that. I'll take my car there now and sell it to myself for the money.

Windows Tints are R2500 or so last time I checked and AutoArmor isn't much cheaper.
