Thought I'd share this with people.
Check out Onavo - is an iPhone app you install and it saves your 3G data.
Basically what they do is install a system level profile which then acts as a proxy server. They then proxy all (well most, not SSL & upload and certain other) data via their servers and compress it to save on your data costs. Not unlike how Opera do it and I think what the Blackberry BIS services does too.
OK yes - for the paranoid people - maybe you won't even try / use it but for me - I know what I am doing when I am on 3G so I am willing to save on the data cost and get the benefit.
There is talk of it being a paid for services sometime, not sure when or if will be the app that is charged or a monthly subs or whatever, but in the meanwhile until then - I'm gonna use it. App is free for the moment on the Appstore.
For Q&A and concerns about privacy etc they have answered some of the things here
I've tried it out and works pretty well, just 1 morning of doing a bit of data here and there I saved 800kb - I know that isn't a lot - but think of that over a longer period of time. I could notice there was compression of graphics but when you just wanting to have a casual glance at something - I thought was fine for my needs. So this may not suit everyone.
Post your comments/thoughts/feedback if you try it out.
