OK, so I'm still looking for a cheapie Android tab, but then i'm thinking ... if i spend a liiiiitle bit more i can actually get a really NICE tab.
So, in my Googling, I see this Onda vi40 ...
Anyone got one yet? Or know someone who has it?
Specs look fantastic. And retail is under $250
Even with shipping that's like R2300 for a 10" ICS tab, Capacitive IPS screen, 16GB memory, 1GB RAM, 1GHz processor.
...The 8GB is even cheaper!

What's the catch here? (assuming the thing works ok, and there's no need for after-sales service)

Has been looking these jobbies since Christmas but first ICS availability and then the Chinese new year has put my plans on hold for a bit.

The Onda uses the Allwinner A10 chipset which seems nice but for some reason I don't like the 3 physical buttons at the bottom. Teclast A10, Window N90 and Cube U9GT2 looks better imo (all build by Visture I think, just different badging) but uses the more reliable yet slower Rockchip processor.

Having tried an iPad for pdf reading I can honestly say that for me personally the 4:3 screen works better than most standard 16:10 Android devices (although I've only used the crappy Huawei S7 for comparison) ... I also think the 9.7" tablet is too big and heavy for extended reading in bed sessions so I'm leaning more towards the 8" form factor where the Ramos W13 and Window N80 has caught my eye (Onda Vi30 once again has the stupid physical buttons)

Will probably narrow down my choice by the end of the month once supply has stabilised.

Wow... that Window N90 looks great! 10-point IPS screen!
EDIT... not dirt cheap like some of the other tabs, though. Still...
