One account, multiple accounts

I was at a friends place the other day, when he went over his cap. I pppoe'd using my parents account coz I didn't have his admin passwords and I could connect again. I wanted to know, would I be able to connect using a different account to the internet if I can connect to someone else's wireless if we are using different service providers. My parents and my friends both use Telscum. If this is so, we could have one person with an ADSL line installed, and everyone who connects uses his own cap.

What are the disadvantages of doing this?

can't log into more than one a/c on the same line as far as im aware.

You can login with more than one account per line.

But it depends on how their ADSL router is configured. Options are:
1) Modem/Router does the "dial-up" for you.
You'll have to make the modem/router do the dialing for you, and I dont know of many that will connect more than one account at a time for you

2) Router acts as a bridge
You can connect with more than one account at a time.

Worked fine for us for about 3 days. Both accounts was with the same provider though. Could it be that it worked because the one account had finished its cap?

EdRobinson is wrong. Like daffy said, when the modem is in bridge-mode the modem can run many accounts at the same time on the same adsl line.

What you normally cannot do though is log on using the same acount details in 2 places at the same time, though some ISP's do allow this.

In regards to your question :

A : Yes as long as you're using the PPOE method to connect. I.e. Each machine establishes it's own dial-up connection with the modem.

Q : What are the disadvantages ?
A : When somebody is using the line to 100% of it's capacity, the others are going to have a performance degradation. I've never tested what kind of degradation you'll get.

A : Each Dial-Up connection has it's own cap and costs and is managed by the ISP in it's own merit. The cost of the ADSL line rental is halved [depends how many are using the same line obviously].

Thats kinda what I'm getting at. If each person gets his/her own account and shares the cost of the line rental with all using it, wireless communities would grow much faster. People would be more willing to share their connection. It also goes with the ideas of a wireless community. The person who has the line is being reimbursed for allowing others to connect, but is not making a profit. Maybe we should look into that a bit more.

Yep ... awesome ...
Problem is that :
- running a cable across property boundaries without a licence is illegal.
- transmitting across property boundaries without a licence is illegal.

But ... beyond the little unfair illegalities the govmint is imposing ... you can also:
- Provide the cheapest VOIP based telephone service to your neoighbours.
- Provide a community based hub for community services and awareness.
- Start selling the support to hook into your "network" of services.
- Start a security network with CCTV camera's and stuff.
- Provide a mini-shop where basics like milk + break can be ordered.
- Provide extra internet based training facilities for your community.

But ... nooooo ... it's illegal cos govmint is faar too short sighted.
I say doit anyway - if you have the time and resources and in a couple of years time the community benefit will be clear and there is no way in heck that govmint will be able to close you.
