One contract, two phones

I have a post-paid data contract with Vodacom which allows me to have 3 separate data SIMs each with its own phone number. 1 SIM is for a desktop computer, 1 SIM for a laptop and 1 SIM for a tablet. All three computers draw data from the same data "pool" and the two additional SIMs cost me R8.99 each per month.

I also have a post-paid contract for my phone on the same account. Is it possible to have the same arrangement for the phone as for my data? In other words, can I have two separate phone numbers feeding off one contract?

Yes, you can have a twin call card .... but only one sim can be used at a time, and the last sim to be switched on will be the one receiving incoming calls. Can get confusing. Data sims can only use data. Twin Call can use both data and voice .... but the main draw back is as mentioned....only one sim at a time can be used and last one to be switched on will receive the incoming calls.

On MTN you get 2 phone numbers, both can be on, when making a call from the second phone it would show as "private number". When you receive a call it would only get to be forwarded if the first number is busy or off. When you receive a call on the second number, the second phone would ring.

With this kind of setup you get only voicemail for you main number, and it's linked on your first number.

I had an epic f-up with my voicemail for 3 months because I had a dual sim.

Rather get a separate contract

Put one of the data sims in a 3g portable router.. that connects via wifi problem solved.

I'm afraid this won't work for me. My wife carries an '"el Cheapo" Nokia with a prepaid SIM for use in emergency. If she switches on her phone she would be able to make calls but she wouldn't be able to call me.

With a prepaid SIM it's "use it or loose it". As the phone is virtually never used we have to remember to make a call at least once every three months or the SIM gets cancelled and any balance still available disappears.

A separate contract for a phone that may not make 1 call a year is a complete waste of money. A nominal charge for a fully functional second number on an existing contract in the same way that my three Data SIMS operate would be ideal.

Ah well. Prepaid, with all its drawbacks, it has to be.

You could take out a 4U month to month contract. No monthly fee and month to month. You only pay for what you use.
