So you’ve tried Twitter, and you have one or two tweets, but you don’t really ‘get’ it. Here’s a good reason for the ‘serious set’ to get on Twitter.

It’s actually a couple of reasons, and it’s all about information.

Twitter allows you to post your ‘status’ to the web. What am I doing now? Have alook at Twitter.com/tomVS and see if you can spot the tweet.

‘Having coffee’ or ‘Waiting for a meeting’ or ‘Waiting for a download’ are some common messages. Anything goes, as long as it fits in 140 characters.

It also has a cellphone compononet, and you can SMS updates or even receive them via SMS. Subscribe to your friend’s Twitter, and you’ll constantly receive the updates they post. It’s gone a step further, and people started using it to send continual little updates like a mini blog.

You can now even send a direct message to a user, so you can send me a direct message telling me how lame Twitter is.

It’s the ultimate social networking tool. Read: useless with no business model.
But I’ve finally discovered a business angle to it, and it’s lovely. Commercial content providers – like MyADSL – have started using it to push out headlines.

As an example, I subscribe to BBCSciTech on Twitter. When they post a new headline, I immediatly get an update. Not on my cell phone (that’s too expensive), but there are several tools on both PC and Mac to choose from. The BBC also Twitters Technology, Business, Sport, News, World News and more, or you can follow CNET.com’s news on Twitter.

Using a great servcie from TinyURL.com they add the story link to the Tweet, so I can click through on things I like.

My mom can’t do rss, but she can surely follow Twitter.
