As the title suggests, I am looking for a way to backup my OneDrive that sits in the cloud directly to an external HDD bypassing my laptop HDD.

Is this possible?

Ideally what I am looking for which I cannot figure out how to do is...
  • Have a full sync of my cloud onedrive with an external HDD that is connected all the time to my laptop (onedrive linked directly to the external HDD)
  • When I travel I disconnect the external hdd and run from onedrive cloud until I am back to the office
However the problem I run into is that desktop icons do not show up because these are now sitting on the external hdd which onedrive is looking for and onedrive comes up with an error that it cannot find the onedrive folder...

Anyone know a way to do this perhaps ?

Hope this post makes sense...

Easiest would be to use robocopy to duplicate the folder from OneDrive to the external HDD, maybe run it on a schedule or something to have it keep both folders in sync.

Thanks, will look into this.

Will this copy directly from the cloud ? or will it require the files to be on my local HDD ?

It will copy whatever is in your local OneDrive folder.

The only other way would be to move the OneDrive folder to the external and then have it copy from there to the local disk with robocopy, perhaps.

Maybe someone else knows of another solution but that is all my tired brain can come up with.

You could just do a batch file and then run it as a scheduled task. I do that for a few clients. For them we copy data from one machine to the one drive and on another machine we copy it back onto a new drive

Thanks, sounds a little complicated for me. I will have to look into how to do this...

Basically I want a full copy of my onedrive on a physical drive and I do not have enough space on my laptop

Are you talking about the regular default directories in your default user folder?

You can relocate them but it’s a bit of a trick.

If it’s a different folder just move it, to the external and then configure it to sync to Onedrive.

DO NOT try to move the entire User folder, just the folders inside it.

Why not use the Files on Demand setting? Then you can just download the files you will need regular access to beforehand if you venture to a place where there is no internet.

If there is a folder you need offline access to, just select 'Always Keep on this device' on the file or folder you require.

This makes the most sense. The whole point of OneDrive is that you don't have to keep a local copy of everything.

Try to use tools like Gs Richcopy 360 or Goodsync, both can handle this kind of copy between Onedrive and External harddrives easly, fastly and with no hassle.

Have you used either of these tools personally ? Which would you recommend...
