Hi guys,

I have the oppurtunity to bring one ofthese Onkyo Receivers in from the States..I'm not too worried about guarantees etc. My only worry is - will it work here in SA with our power voltages etc. That's why i'm turning to the guru's on this forum to check it out and advise if i should do it? Thanks in advance.cheers

The problem is that the US model needs 110V... there isn't a 110V / 220V switch. The US ones accept 110V, and the European/SA ones accept 220V.

So I wouldn't buy it...

Is there perhaps a good quality converter one can buy to bring down the voltage from 220V to 120V or 110V? And would such a converter affect the receiver in any way or is there any risk of doing this?

Hmmm... You'd need a hefty converter... I don't know of any off-the-shelf ones that would be big enough. You'd have to look into this...

mmm, they would prob be quite expensive as well..i've noticed they have a wattage value as well? what impact would this have on the receiver? would that mean the converter can only supply 500W of power, while the receiver would try and supply 100W per channel if volume is turned up? just trying to make sense of it all, i may be completely off track here..lol..but is doesn't seem so worth it to bring it in anymore. might as well buy a receiver locally then. Looking for something in the Onkyo's category, but i only have R7-R8k to spend on a receiver. Not sure if i can find something for that price? Maybe a sony STR-DA3500ES, or a Denon?

I think it is more than just a step down transformer. Some power electronics wizardry would be required to take care of the 60Hz too.

I don't know. Call the company I linked to. They should be able to give you some advice and a price.

Otherwise, like you said, rather buy locally.

I agree, rather buy locally but as an owner of an Onkyo 606 I would recommend to stay clear of them as I have been one of the many to have the video issues that plagued the 606.
