Hi there

I've set up a network to share my internet connection with the rest of my house....

I'm using a proxy server to control and share the internet but only browsing seems to work!!!! Do I need to setup additional servers to allow my programs to connect to their online servers...? ( port 6112)

I'm using a program called allegro surf which can create numerous servers
I'm not sure which server, if needed, will be needed to allow port 6112 to be shared..?

any help would be great!!

I used to use AllegroSurf waaaaay back in my R7-weekend days to share my connection with the rest of the family... It is a great piece of software - but limiting in todays environment.

Basic proxy servers only support HTTP protocol - due to their design and implementation. You can get something called a SOCKS proxy going in AllegroSurf and that will in theory get any other application to function through the proxy... however that is only if the actual application has support for SOCKS proxy. Many decent ones do - but it is a hassle to setup and generally has to be set for each individual application that you wish to use through the proxy.

A better idea is to setup a NAT router - will provide you basically the same sort of functionality for the machines both inside your network and on the internet. With the added benifit that most software will work out-the-box with no proxy settings required and a much wider variety of software will be able to function!

PS google any of the words above that confuse you :D

Thanks ambo,

Will a NAT router allow me to limit the amount of traffic each pc utilized? Because I cant have the rest of my network download away at my precious 3g cap!!!!

Windows Internet Connection Sharing is based on a implementation of NAT - however you would not easily be able to control bandwidth limits through that ;)

I would personally recommend one of the boxed linux firewall solutions such as IPcop. The drawback is that you need a separate computer for that - mine is running happily on a PI-133 at the moment though :D However that gives you a firewall with NAT, a pretty web based interface and lots more. And there are plenty of add-ons for things like capping individual machines on your network.

I've got a spare pc lying around....! Do I need any linux skills for IPcop..?

So if I get a linux box with IPcop i will be able to share my int connection and cap them?

I use CCproxy , you can use it for Http, Rtsp, Secure, Gopher, Ftp, Socks4/5, MMS, Telnet, News etc. You can create accounts for each user, limit the amount of bandwidth, thus capping other users, you can also shape the account (to limit the speed), add web filters, time schedules, allow certain traffic and blocking other types example: allow http and disable socks or mms, etc. You can even get logs of how much bandwidth was used or which sites have been visited.

This program is under 1 meg in size and has all these features unlike other software that may not include everything in one package. Hope this helps.

CCproxy seams easier than installing linux!!! I'm downloading as we speak

But does it allow gaming protocols to run via the proxy...???

Thanks
