Hey guys

Does online gaming chow alot of gigs? reason I'm asking is, I switched over from uncapped to capped beginning of this month and I've never bothered to check my usage on uncapped so Idk how much i used. This is my first month on capped(50Gig) and it went rather quickly, so now i would like to know if online gaming eats up alot of cap, would I then benefit from that Do-gaming top up feature for R49/month on Telkoms website?

No, not so much the actual gaming. It's more the updates and new game downloads that chew the cap.

Depends on the game. Sometimes I can go through a gig a day.

well on PC a game like Counter Strike takes close to 150mb per hour, where a game like Path of Exile hardly uses any data.

Normal the last weekend I'm out of data and my line drop to between 386kbs to 512kbs (softcap) and my ping in counter stike go is the same. The first thing is sign up to telkom email usage tarcker and get email ever mornig with data usages. All telkom do internet get free data from 00:00 to 06:00.

Gaming itself hardly chows data. Maybe if you game for about 6 - 8 hours you looking at a couple of hundred megs, I'd say 300 MB's at most MMORPGS. FPS can chow a load more.

Updates is where the problem lies ;)

If you play a game that utilities a lot of voices and talking over mic to communicate it pushes up the cap it will use.
Also for example on CSGO, if you play in 128tick servers, it uses much more resources from your internet than a 64 tick server would. So there are soooo many factors and it depends from game to game.

That is the reason why I ALWAYS have uncapped

Why did you switch over to Capped? Budget or problems on Uncapped (congested etc?) Look for a decent Uncapped WISP in your Area if it's the latter.

Pings and stability in general are better on capped accounts than uncapped.

Going to reply even though this is a necrothread because I was also looking for information, and surprisingly this has not been taken seriously by anyone anywhere. MYBB might want to look into testing and doing an article on this.

I have a 10mbps ADSL line, but due to family size and the grand children now reaching YouTube age I am finding myself being constantly disconnected from my online games, I thought that getting a LTE or LTE_A contract as a separate gaming only solution for myself might be a feasible solution and started looking online for answers. - Nothing but sarcastic comments from the vertically and intellectually challenged

So I have done my own preliminary testing using my cell phone on tether to play "the Division" for 3 timed, 1 hour sessions, no team speak or other online facility was used during the tests.

test results as follows in MB's;

1) 117,72
2) 120.01
3) 114.9

I am definitely going to take a separate contract as the total data usage over a month shouldn't require anything other than a 10Gb package, and Telkoms double data deal make this cheap enough.

Please share the setup and package you are using, sitting with the same dilemma.

Might not be relevant anymore or maybe it is. I use on average about 20GB a day. This is for 4 people all connecting to my 100mbps fibre, so PC updates, phone updates, me playing PUBG and streaming, facebook and then me watching twitch for +-3 hours a day. Keeping in mind, because of my line speed, my youtube videos show in 4K, when available and when watching, it's in 1080p when available.
