What type of protocol does online gaming use? Is it different to all the other internet protocols? Reason I ask is because of the throttling on 384 accounts by afrihost i cant even play BFBC2 on local servers, I think petitioning them to keep gaming "protocol" at a guaranteed 384kbps while throttling the rest would keep me happy with them.

"Gaming protocols" is a non-business protocol and as such will be subject to shaping... unfortunately it's just one of those things.

Different games use different ports, but they all generally fall under p2p ports which is why they are shaped.

I see that the SSL port (443) is shaped so badly that my VPN system won't even connect any more..... that's a little letdown I've noticed.... reason? It's a popular port for the Astraweb news servers.....

damn that sucks, and gaming is really the most important in terms of speed, if http is slow, you just wait a few seconds longer for it to load, if gaming is slow, you cant play.

It depends highly on the game as well...

Mosy FPS games use some high random number UPD port, this will almost certainly always fall into a "p2p" category.
