Hi guys

Not sure right section to post... but lets see.

Online forum software, aka hosted solution, whats the options... and whats the cost.

phpBB

Most hosting panels now support Softaculous so you can find it under Scripts or Softaculous.

I remember phpBB... this looks like a SW drop though, that I'd download and run on my server (hosted somewhere...)
Anyone aware of a hosted service. aka I go in and create my forum name, they host the url and software.

Maybe: Wordpress.com and install BuddyPress plugin.

Something like this?

I believe with Tapatalk you can actually have it create a forum for you, not sure what the underlying engine is or if it's their own.

Discourse has a hosted solution on their website. Possibly some of the other Open Source ones do as well.

vBulletin is a popular commercial offering (think Mybroadband used to run on this.)

My potential user base is not that "computer saffy"
So want to keep it at simple forum... otherwise a Discourse group or Slack would have been a good option also.
Want to see if i can do it with a hosting/provider that might have a app interface also, know Bikehub.co.za use to have a app,

So does MyBB, but it's not a hosted solution.

Please no, I try to forget that vBulletin ever existed. The original developers left to develop XenForo, which is LIGHT YEARS ahead of vBulletin. If you want something with the functionality, usability, and design (yes, there are themes, but you can't make garbage look better than good looking garbage) of an early-to-mid-2000s website it might be just the thing for you, but nobody else should even consider it.

Half the forums of the world used to use it, but most left years ago.

If you want to see what vBulletin looks like, have a look at these sites:

https://forum.vbulletin.com/ (latest version)
https://www.linuxquestions.org/ (previous version)
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/forum.php (previous version)
https://www.refrigeration-engineer.com/forums/forum.php (previous version)
https://www.hvac-talk.com/vbb/ (previous version)

Again, not a hosted solution though.
