Hi guys hopefully you can help me figure this one out.

On the weekend I went on an updating spree. Amongst other things I updated my codec pack. My PC never handled MP4's well so that was my main reason for getting new ones. I downloaded Shark007's codec pack (32 and 64 bit as the website tells you to get both).
Now I got NO sound whatsoever except my system sounds.
No sound in games, music, video in various formats.
So I uninstall Shark007's codec and install my previous codecs (Klite) but still no sound.

I think it's also worth mentioning that I downloaded a large backlog of Windows 7 updates as well on the weekend. Don't wanna rule those out completely, there were done with the codecs so it could be a coincidence.

Uninstall klite, reinstall shark, reset all settings, uninstall shark again. You most probably broke your codecs, if you want to play videos you using VLC media player, or something else.

Otherwise google your problem.

Hey some time back had the same issue, did some updates on my machine, and audio was gone...after several tries of everything, went to device manager found all my audio hardware, uninstalled them, and than ran "check for system changes" , that reinstalled the drivers and sorted out my issue, hope this helps.

Worked!
Was so focused on the codecs that didn't even cross my mind. Thanks bru

I also often get this on my Win7 64 - I have an HDMI from the GPU to the HT amp, and it sometimes "loses" the hardware and defaults to the onboard sound - a quick removal of the sound devices in Device Manager, with a quick refresh always sorts it out.
Hasn't happened for a while now, so am not sure what the root cause is...but the above certainly fixes it! :)
