Does anyone know if any other provider owns ADSL lines other than Telkom in SA, and the relative size of these players?
I think Neotel has its own lines but can't find any info about it...Also MWEB (although they seem to just rent Telkom lines too)...

Thanks for responses...i thought there were some other smaller players
SO that means all DSL lines are Telkoms'...Monopoly?!

No, it means that none of the other 600-odd licensed network operators want to install copper based services and would rather focus on fibre or wireless services.

"Telkom is not a monopoly" is right up there with "nicotine isn't addictive" in the stupid **** I've heard on myBB...

McD you really do embarrass yourself going on like this, however in this case I suspect you're being trolled.

I can see the IP addresses ;)

PS. see Arthur's explanation of a monopoly in yesterday's thread on Naked ADSL.

You get two types of monopolies: 1. Coercive. 2. Non-coercive.

Coercive monopolies are erected or protected by the State. Caesar uses laws (ultimately police and guns) to prevent or restrict competition. Coercive monopolies are always bad, and always end up gouging consumers.

Non-coercive monopolies can arise for many reasons: technological innovation, market leadership, lack of viable competitive space, etc. A chemist in a small town might have a monopoly on the supply of pharmaceuticals because the market isn't big enough to support two suppliers, for example. Non-coercive monopolies are not bad.

Telkom used to be a coercive monopoly. Then Caesar changed his mind.

PPS. and I did not say that here :p
