I recently had MetroFibre fibre installed and they provided a Calix GigaCentre ONT. This has 4 ethernet ports and WiFi and I could configure it on 192.16.1.1. and all worked well.

Except I wasn't happy with the small ISP and cancelled and signed up with Axxess.

Axxess activated it today and the ethernet port I am using allows an internet connection but WiFi doesn't work (connects with old password, but no internet) and I can't configure the ONT/router any more (192.168.1.1 times out). IPConfig shows that the DHCP is now giving me an LAN IP address of 156.155.x.x (Gateway 156.155.x.x).

Axxess support say that this has been remotely configured by MetroFibre and the Calix now just serves as an ONT with one working port. If I want WiFi, I must now plug another Router/WiFi access point into that port that I can then I can configure that.

I am very surprised by this. Is this normal? Why can't I use Axxess and the full functionality of the Calix?

Is it possible to buy a single ONT/Router device or am I now stuck with this two-device setup?

Is there any way to log into the Calix, at least to disable the now useless WiFi?

TIA

Found some of the answers in this thread.

But more questions:

Do I need a router with DHCP client and server? Otherwise how to configure it?
Any makes/models suggestions (for SOHO)?

Long story short - only metrofibre can manage the ONT, you will now need to ask them to disable the wireless

The ONT is now acting as a bridge essentially and you will need your own router - if the WAN is DHCP or PPPoE will depend on Axxess

Any new router will work, they all do DHCP or PPPoE

If you use MetroFibre as the FNO and ISP the ONT is configured for everything.

If you switch from MetroFibre ISP to another ISP the ONT gets provisioned for Open Access which means the ONT is locked down and you need to use any Ethernet wan router to dial PPPoE or DHCP.

Axxess should have sent a router if not you can use any router that has Ethernet Wan. If you have a Huawei LTE router they work also and some DSL modems also have Ethernet Wan ports.

Thanks for the replies.

I would still like to get the WiFi turned off if possible. A MetroFibre support person told me that I should ask Axxess to do it, an Axxess support person told me it was not possible.

Is this correct?

The WIFI integrated into the Calix ONT can now only be turned off by MetroFibre - they will do this remotely from their side

Quite strange because MFN usually supply a Calix 803Gv2 ONT if you use another ISP on their network. If you use MFN direct - they give you an 844G which is an ONT & router.

So Axxess needs to log a ticket to have the ONT re-provisioned and that should switch the wifi off.

@Captain Axxess

Like @cavedog said, you will need a separate router for your internet to work. Most ISP's like Axxess use PPPoE details that you enter into your router for you to connect to the internet. The ONT only acts as a bridge between the FNO and your ISP. I used Axxess as a VDSL ISP and I needed to enter the PPPoE details into my router to connect to the internet. When I got fiber with Vuma, they installed the ONT and I connected my router to it and entered the PPPoE details my ISP gave me - and voila! I was connected to the internet and are happy surfing, downloading and streaming ever since!

Hi @Spoed,

Because you use MetroFibre as the Infrastructure provider and Axxess as the ISP, you will need to connect a separate router to your ONT. The setup is done with DHCP configuration, but the ONT serves as a Modem and as such you will need a router in order to get connected.

Please DM me your account details, then we take it from there.

Thanks for the reply. I've got the picture now (still think it's a waste not to be able to use the full functionality of the ONT) and have got a router plugged in and all is working fine.

After getting rebuffed a few times by Axxess tech support, following @cavedog 's advice I eventually got someone in "Lines" to log a ticket with MetroFibre to turn off the WiFi, but am still waiting.
