Vodacom's growth via abusing their monopoly is starting to work against them. They can't compete with small guy, without making their shareholders unhappy. And they'll slowly loose profits from people migrating as new CellC towers pop up.
So all Vodacom can do is try to find the middle point between them and CellC and wait for CellC to catch up to them. MTN completely missed the bus (or ran in front of it).
So CellC will eventually become the new MTN and MTN the old CellC.
I think Vodacom has simply decided it is above having to match anyone else's prices -- we've been waiting endlessly for more appropriate prepaid data rates and there are often hints it might happen, but there's nothing.
Vodacom can do this because for many of us, theirs remains the dominant infrastructure so it's a 'take it or leave it' attitude. I would switch if I could, but can't because the cheaper operators simply do not serve my area well and plough ahead to serve their main revenue streams in the cities, breaking their frequent promises to remember the more rural areas.
