Hi there,

I have a 2015 Opel Adam 1.0T Jam OPC pack.

Out of interest I got a quote on what the car would be worth were I to sell it? Offers came in at around R130 000 or R140 000 decided to hang onto it (don't really have a choice as my settlement is currently R140 000)

Car was purchased in April 2015 new for R240 000 and currently has 23000km on the clock.

Surely my car hasn't lost 50% of it's value in just under 2 years?

Dealers will always low ball you, depending on your mileage you probably could get R180k out of it going private maybe even more.

If you trade in on new you should be able to get more than the settlement. If you trade in at a second hand dealer then you can forget getting settlement.

New car salesman are desperate to move stock. Second hand dealers will just try to milk you.

From what I have seen, Dealers on average sell cars for 30k more thank what they them in for so 140k for a trade in sounds about right. (Dealer Scum). That MM and transunion book values are meaningless. Did you pay full retail? Sounds like you also paid full retail which makes your in settlement tradin in shortfall predicament worse. Keep the car for a year or 18 months more. There is only so much of value a car can loose.

I guess 50% on my A5 in 5 years and 60,000km wasn't so bad then!

OP : I guess what you can do is advertise privately, but arrange with a dealer to be the middle man. I did it with two cars and they ask for a commission of R5k-R10k
