Opel Astra CDE, Model 2000 - Power & Rev problem

Hi there

Please advise l drive an Opel Astra CDE, model 2000 & yesterday it just sounded like its jerking.

I stopped & switched the ignition off, but after starting it again its idling was up & down - though l did not press accelerator & lost power.

What could be the problem?

I think they rev themselves up and down to about 3500rpm when the battery is dead.
