Hie guys I was driving my corsa bakkie then it started like to explode through the exhaust before the engine just cut off. I tried to restart it but it just couldn't. I called my mechanic with his diagnostic tool and he told me the ecu lost its memory now I must replace it with another set that is key, transponder, control body, cluster, and ecu from another corsa being scrapped. Could this be ryt how much am I looking at reasonably. Thanx

Sounds like the coil-pack and/or plug leads. Could also be a blown head gasket. Either way, I can almost ensure you it is not the ecu etc.

Buy a plug spanner from Midas and remove the plug leads. Then remove the spark plugs.

If you see water & oil flowing out the spark plug chamber, then it's the head gasket.

If you don't see any water & oil mixture flowing out the plug chamber, replace the coil pack (can also get from Midas, but rather try and get a Bosch brand from Diesel-Electric) and replace the plug-leads.

Just ensure that you connect the plug leads the same way as the old leads, otherwise your corsa will sound like a tractor. Also replace all the spark plugs, just to cover everything.

The above can be done easily if you don't mind to get your hands dirty. Good luck!

+1 have had a coil pack fail like this on a different GM vehicle...

And never call that mechanic again.

Yes, ECU's do go faulty, but don't lose their memory. It's an age old crutch that backyard mechanics use, when they either 1. Want to milk you of every cent you have or 2. Don't know what they are doing and have to blame something.....

To add to what Captain said...

Before removing spark plugs:

Does the engine turn/swing? If it doesn't, you've broken a timing belt/chain. Look for another engine. If it does swing, breathe a sigh of relief.

Is there spark? If there isn't, get a coil pack.

And as Captain said, the head might have blown. Easy trick to check is to open your radiator bottle. If it bubbles like crazy when the engine is turning, gasket blown.

Good luck
