Hello, I have a problem with the cigarette lighter in my car, it was installed by myself and the actual cigarette lighter seems to work. However the problem is my garmin won't charge through the socket nor will my girlfriends. My Camera Battery charger won't work either. I used a air mattress pump this morning and it WORKS ????? but the other stuff still wont work??? Any advice or answers on how to get it to work would be greatly appreciated. Thanls:)

Maybe you wired the polarity the wrong way round.

I did think that but why would the pump and cigarette lighter work?

Some devices have no polarity so they can work both ways, like light bulbs. (and I'm guessing your pump and cigarette lighter)

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cigarette_lighter_receptacle

For the 12-volt systems, the "contact point," which is the center part of the plug when viewed end-on, carries the positive voltage, whereas the "can" part, which is the outer part of the connector, carries the negative voltage (which is the "ground" connection for most automobiles, which have a negative ground electrical system).

One factor is the voltage of the charger. Some USB devices are very sensitive to the voltage provided. Eg, my Defy won't charge on 5.2V.

Another factor has to do with the termination of the data lines. If you have a look on WikiPedia they mention it there as well.

Well swapped the polarity around and my camera battery charger works, only to find the fuse in the garmin charger has blown :(

Luckily they are fused.

Fuses are cheap, take it with to an electronics shop and they will sell you a new one, should be like R10 or even less
