Opel Corsa Problem

Hi All

A friend's corsa has stopped turning over correctly it seems. As far as I can tell all the interior lights work as well as all the exterior lights. When trying to start the car the engine light comes on and you can hear the starter trying but then it dies. It's a sort "duurt" noise then it cuts out.

Any help would be appreciated.

2006 and about 48 000KM.

Most likely battery.
It can handle light loads like lighting, but not the starter.

Test: Jump start it from another car. If it starts, drive it to a battery shop for a load test on the battery. You'll probably be pulling out R500 or so for a new one.
If it still won't start, you probably have a wiring problem between the battery and starter. Take the jumper leads, find the fat wire going to the starter, and clamp on. Take the other end and touch to red(+) terminal on battery. Then start the car. If it starts, drive it to an auto-electrician to replace the wire, or get a cable from a spares shop and DIY.

If you can't get jumper leads, push start it and drive to an auto electrician who will tell you what is wrong, but it will be one of the above.

It could be that the battery is exhausted from all the attempts to start it, which may imply another problem.
Does it smell strongly of petrol?

It seems it was a faulty wire. One of the wires leading to the starter was quite badly worn and frayed a bit badly. Looks like that section of wire will need to be replaced.

hi ther guys ......my cam belt broke and ended up doing the whole lites 1.4 engine. Great buy a few days later it had the orange lite with the engine out line come on then off. at low revs it was fine put petrol and the revs climb and splutter etc........now the lite is on permanent and surfing the net i cnt find an answer as to what the problem could be HELP......PLEASE

This is interesting that you have determined your problem to be what I can only assume to be the Earth Wire which is attached to the Starter Motor?
My daughter uses our old Corsa which recently also went through a spat of starting problems etc. The problem had us baffled for a while, even removing the Alternator and having that checked out only to discover in the end that the Earth Wire that is grounded to the starter motor was corroded. The moment that wire was replaced the car drove better than it had done in a long time.
