I tried to join Lagnet to chat, like I normally do, and I get this:

Error: Closing Link: 0.0.0.0 (Open Proxy found on your host. Please visit www.blitzed.org/proxy?ip=196.46.65.230 for more information. (2005/03/26 15.38))

I go to the site and I get this:

Open proxy lookup

Performing a lookup on the IP address 196.46.65.230.

The IP address 196.46.65.230 is an active entry in the OPM blacklist, it was confirmed as an open proxy by our scanning software at 2005-03-25 02:21:11 GMT. Please refer the administrator of the system to this page so they can take the necessary steps to secure the open proxy. Full details..

As an open proxy provides an insecure means of accessing resources through your network, we recommend this proxy should be secured as soon as possible.

Follow these steps to ensure permanent removal from the OPM blacklist:

Well... I clicked on the Removal Request

Entry for 196.46.65.230 successfully removed. Our zone files are rebuilt every 30 minutes, but please allow several hours for normal DNS propogation.

But what the heck was this all about?

It means that either 196.46.65.230 is an open proxy (i.e. a proxy server that allows anyone to use it) or connects via an transparent open proxy (as happened to IS recently, one of their transparent proxies was open).

An open proxy is a security risk and commonly used for spam. So OPM has started a list of them, and some people reference it. Should it be found in their then the server/network admin can block it.

I would not recommend removing the IP from it, until you have verified that the open proxy has been closed properly as it can be readded and never removed. Esp if it is say a transparent proxy on iBurst side, this could blacklist iBurst indefinately.

Ok it was not I that put up an open proxy, but here's what I think:
Someone, judging from the IP address it would've been either an iBurster or WBS or UUNET (not so likely UUNET), experimented with a proxy & forgot to engage its chastity belt, this was subsequently detected/reported by/to blitzed.org.

So, Pan connects and is unfortunate enough to get an IP address that has been blacklisted...

My advice: disconnect, then connect & get yourself a new IP address ;).
