So I am near around retirement age and given the back problems, I want something that has a higher ride height then your normal hatch and have taken interest in mini SUVs crossovers. That said the car is mostly for driving around town and even maybe some travelling.

I have a budget of around R220 000 however I can push it to around + - R240 000 if it needs to be. Preferably not more than 2 years old with low mileage or demo with warranty and service plan still in place.

I have had a look at the Juke, C4 Cactus, Vitara, SX4, 500X, 2008, 500L Trekking and Captur which fits within my price range. I do like the CX3 and HRV but they are too pricey for me. I do not like the Soul, Duster or Ecosport, so that’s out.

My colleagues says I should wait for CHR, Creta and Ignis which is due towards end of the year or early next year. I’m not sure if I should wait unless it’s really good and pricing is right.

I’m finding it hard to decide which one is the best when all of them are compared. Which one would you guys buy or recommend and why? Anyone experience pros and cons on these vehicles? Thanks in advance.

With the budget in mind and you near retirement, I don't think the new 2017 models will be a option?
I guess you are not to worried about resale value given the models in OP.

The 500L will be my choice out of the bunch. Loads of space, good tech inside and out and I would assume a good tourer.

Nice deals currently on the ASX btw.

How about a used Nissan Qashqai or CRV? CX5 would be out of your budget.
Out of those Vitara

Are you referring to a previous generation SX4? The old ones were equipped with 2.0L engine. They were awful.

Has more power than the current 1.6 model. In what way is it terrible?

Mokka

Well, I'm not that really interested in more power. Driving dynamics and overall refinement are not up to the high bar set by the competition. They have improved the new SX4 however it's not perfect.
If I was to spend on old car, I would rather go something premium something like Germans.

I have gone to test drive all the vehicles and this is what I experience with each vehicle, I don't know if anyone feels the same. So I have now cut my choices down to three, Vitara, C4 Cactus and 500X. Oh I forgot about the Mokka, I will test drive later during the day, they seem pricey.

SX4 - It is spacious, the steering wheel is leather-trimmed there's a nice feeling of solidity about the vehicle. It's well damped too and the car feels sure footed and stable. It is very well equipped load of standard features. It's let down by its bumpy ride, limited rear headroom and and underpowered.

Vitara - is a solid that offers decent space, flexibility and good ride quality and pleasing to drive. The Vitara feels like it’s built to last and the interior is spacious and comfortable. The lack of a soft touch dash is a downside, maybe slightly underpowered too. It does lack some of standard comfort features.

C4 Cactus - interior is really good in places but a bit not so good in others. The engine is impressive, nippy and the ride quality is good too. It is very well equipped load of standard features. Experience crashy ride on poorly surfaced roads and rear bench doesn’t fold down. Notice a few cheap interior quality trims.

Captur - is comfortable and light steering. Although the auto gearbox isn't as good as an DSG/S tronic. The Captur is not quite as spacious inside as I had thought. Notice a few cheap interior quality trims. Performance is pretty weak & Rear leg room is tight for adults.

2008 - is very comfortable to drive, spacious and practical. It has a classy interior premium feel. Vague steering and engine feels dull underpowered.

Juke - feels solid build and engaging to drive, unfortunately, it’s also cramped and uncomfortable at the same time.

500X - is surprisingly good to drive.” The handling is surprisingly sharp and the engine is impressive. The cabin has a high built quality feel. It’s not quite practical. Ride quality was good, it does seem to soak up bumps but not being sloppy. The steering feel was a bit on the light side but seemed firmer at higher speeds.

Trekking - not quite as comfortable as the standard car, but it's still more settled than mini SUVs, such as the Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur. Overall, the car is reasonably well built, and some of the plastics have a bit of a rough edge. There's more road noise than in the standard car too.

No? Anyone? Not enough feedback, I guess I will stick to German cars, 3 series, C-Class or A4 instead as I'm more familiar with them.

Good luck on that!

I've had a bit of a soft spot for the 500X after I saw one in the metal, but it is Fiat and a relative unknown in the SA market.

Thanks for the summaries of the cars you test drove

You really should give the most over looked German brand a try. They are poised to impress the luxury class.
