Im looking for a new pair of headphones... much better quality ones then the ones I have now.

so while looking around I noticed quite a few of the better quality headphones are labelled open headphones which I've come to understand means that people around you can also hear what's playing. Besides that property is there anything else that makes them so much different.

Never heard of open and closed headphones, but I'm guessing it refers to the ear cushioning?

I have both then, in that case.

The open one is my gaming one which has the mic on. It's also not so harsh on the ears (pressure on the ear shell).

The closed one is for my music, which goes right around the ear and doesn't let any sound out so I can put the volume up really high :D

Go for Sennheisers :) Thei're awesome. Both mine are Sennheisers :D

whenever there's a headphone thread someone say this... that's why I'm going for Sennheisers:D

I'm kind of looking for a general use pair of headphones... something for gaming and music

any suggestions... please nothing overly audiophiley and eccentric, I still need money for my screen upgrade.

Sorry to say, but the two bold words for headphones do not go together.

Gaming headphone is focus on sound positioning, so you can hear your enemies coming from behind. While music headphones, depend on which genre you listen to, some may be very good in bass while lack of mid and high range (your entry level ones), or a very balanced range and big sound stage (which will cost you a lot BTW), but if you are not too fuss about sound quality, you can always get a gaming headset and listen to music occasionally.

I've tried gaming earphones with 5.1 sound or whatever. They didn't sound as good as my Sennheisers! I have a pair of HD-555's, they're awesome. Also, unless you absolutely need closed, I recommend open earphones.

Simply put; open headphones sound better, but closed headphones offer isolation.

By isolation I mean in terms of both sound leaking out from the headphones, and sound leaking in.
Unless you need isolation you should consider open models. You can get closed headphones that sound as good as open models, but generally the closed model will cost more.

That’s not to say that all open headphones are better than all closed models either, there are duds in both teams, as well as some models that break the mould.

Open headphones sound more ‘natural’ than closed models. Generally an open model will have much better soundstage (the ‘width and depth’ of sound), more natural bass (tighter and faster) and better separation (how well individual sounds/instruments/details are defined).
Closed headphones on the other hand tend to have a more ‘boxed in’ sound to them (where it sounds like the music is coming from inside your head) and boomier, more resonant (slower) sounding bass. Often this leads to closed headphones sounding bassier, but if you listen closely it’s normally just because the bass is stopping and starting slower, and less accurately, than it would on an open model. This is why using the term “better” can be very subjective. You might consider slow, boomy overpowering bass to be “better” than well defined and clear bass ;)

On the topic of isolation and leakage; this will depend on volume levels. Generally if you’re listening to open headphones at moderate volume levels people in the same room as you will be able to hear at least some of what you’re listening to. If you have your music loud, they’ll clearly be able to hear what you’re listening to. If people are going to be disturbed by this, you might want to consider closed.
Also, if the ambient volume levels around you are low, you shouldn’t be that disturbed by them with open headphones, however if you’re in a noisy environment (public transport, aircraft etc) then closed headphones may be a better choice as you might have to turn open headphones up to drown out background noise, and that’s potentially damaging to your ears.

i prefer closed ones for gaming music
i listn to alot of trance and techno
im gonna get some funky vibrating ones soon :p

and make sure its good
i used a cheepo R20 one and i went mad from interfearence from the cathodes and neon in my case

I have a cheapo pair of Sennheiser, HD-437. Good for most stuff, I reckon. The thing about getting well made brands like Sennheiser isn't just the sound. I've rolled my chair over the wiring numerous times, not so much as a dent anywhere. And they're comfortable.

hmmmmmmm.... I'll go for the music quality. An normally games that put a lot into there sound put a lot into their grapics (far cry 2, Assassin's Creed etc.) and I think Im going to upgrade my entire PC for that.

Which ones would you say are best for watching anime, movies and series on my pc?

Closed = Hot ears :-/.

I really dont like hot ears:(

Isn't gmaing head phones going to be the same as music head phones? I know in the above people are talking about bass, and all the other things..

but.. are you going to be one of those who goes for like high tech head phones?

Anyway. I have a Labtec head phone.. and they do the "enemy behind" thing and plays good music.. (It's a open one through...)

But anyway... i'm just thinking, wouldn't a normal pair of head phones get the job done?
