ChatGPT Atlas web browser announced

OpenAI unveiled its first artificial intelligence-powered web browser, putting the ChatGPT maker in competition on a new front with Alphabet’s Google.

The browser, called ChatGPT Atlas, is designed to be a more personalized web experience and also field tasks such as booking flights and editing documents on a user’s behalf.
 
Is it possible to get swapped out to the universe where we don't invent these tools? They're great to use & all that but life was fine with humans doing the work and this stuff wasn't plastered everywhere.

You say that now, but I bet you wouldn’t want to give up maps, streaming, or your phone’s camera either! Every “new tool” starts off feeling like too much until we figure out where it fits.

Strange, because I thought those tools never felt like that. They were single-purpose tools, unlike AI that's being applied to everything.

Yeah, its this insane need to shoe-horn AI into everything that is frustrating.

I'd be vaguely interested in this Atlas browser if it was technically better than Chrome/Edge at being a web browser, but its just a skin on top of Chromium with AI features baked in.

Fair point, but I just meant that resistance to change isn’t new, every big shift in technology gets the same reaction at first.

I can apply the same logic to computers in general. They initially were single purpose tools to do number crunching. But it turns out that you can express a lot of problems as a math problem, which computers can solve very quickly.

LLMS are an extension of that idea to text processing. If you can figure out how to turn a problem into text problem, an LLM usually able work on it.

It turns out that a lot of work can be done like this. You can even call other pieces of software with it.

This equivalence doesn't work & neither does this argument. Every previous change was a single purpose thing. AI is a general purpose tool...it can design, play chess and code your app. It's everywhere. So whereas factory automation just affected factories, AI affects almost everything, and people thinking it's just the same old thing as everything that came before is missing the point imo.

True, it’s bigger than anything before, no doubt. But I was talking more about the pattern, every big leap feels like “the end of the old world” until it just becomes normal.

Absolutely, and AI may end up in that sphere eventually..

But there is a difference between the deterministic nature of maths, vs the somewhat probabilistic outputs of LLMs. They're making educated guesses.

You have to have a probabilistic approach for text because language itself isn't deterministic. How many ways do you think I could write a response to your post?

Of course, but when you try to use probabilistic systems to do deterministic work you will run into issues.
 
It's the surrounding hype that bothers me the most, something many a shrewd society manipulator is and will take advantage of.
"AI says we're right, so shuddup and go home, no more protests allowed."

The tech itself isn’t the problem, it’s the narrative around it that’s being shaped to suit certain agendas. Happens every time there’s something big and new.
