Hi

Those of you using ADSL accounts through OpenWeb, can you please give your opinion on the OpenBrowse service that is offered for International browsing once you are capped? Is it worth getting etc?

Thanks!

yeah, i'd be interested in this as well. Getting an openweb account for april, and the main selling point was openbrowse...

I've got an IS account with openweb, haven't reached the cap yet to test openbrowse, but I wouldn't say it's that fast, it works through a proxy and the speed is 96K, so that's just faster than dial-up, if that's your only insentive to get the IS account I would say it's win<> lose situation.

I personally had major trouble with openbrowse, but others seem to enjoy it. I dropped the openbrowse and have just a vanilla IS, must say IS has been pretty good this month

because of openbrowse, i dont get these international problems every1 complains about. It has its down time (once in a blue moon) but it reliable enough for me. Speed are good enough for browsing. Any1 try nukecaps international browsing vpn?

I have openbrowse and its pretty cool. it hardly has any downtime (since i have joined anyways) and the cool thing is, i can access international sites even when IS international is down!

how fast is the international browsing once capped?? comparable to local or way slower??

most of the time i get like 192k speeds. i have a 512 line, so it is slower, but not because openbrowse sucks, but because thats what they offer

yeah using openbrowse is much much better and faster than trying to use the shared line thing if you went over your cap.

It has its issues though, like you cant do Windows Updates throught it cause of the proxy, it gives a error. but for surfing it seems almost just like pre-capped.

You shouldnt be trying to download large files with OpenBrowse. The only way things like this work well at the prices offered is by hoping that users spend more time reading and only use their bandwidth in short bursts.

If every1 is downloading loading large files, nobody is ever idling and it just wont work

i'm a new adsl user, signed up for openbrowse. I have an 192 kbits line, with 192 openbrowse, and get a const 20kb/s (160 kbits) download for normal web traffic. I have at points downloaded about 4 threads at the same time, and they work fine.

It is a little confusing setting up all the apps to work with the proxy thow. I had trouble getting thunderbird working (needs to have socks proxy). Also setting up internet sharing may be confusing. Cause you would like the first few gb's to go trough normal internet, and afterwards trought the proxy.

p2p trought the proxy works: Limewire worked at full speed. Have downloaded only a few torrents trought the proxy, some go ok speeds (7kb/s and up).

O, and Mr_BEEPS gives excelent support!!

I like the account, and it is way better than any other internet I have ever had.

Its made for browsing

Openweb is the ****!!
never had a problem with it. And Mr_Beep gives excellent support!!

But Openbrowse is kinda expensive compared to internet accounts.

I mean I pay R158 a month
for a 2GB intl. + 28GB local after.

Openbrowse cost R60 for 192k (which isnt always 192k because it is shared bandwidth with other people also using it) so speeds aint constant. R139 for 512k.
It would make more sense to rather just buy 2 accounts. R159*2 then you got 30GB to download local stuff (anything you download international can be downloaded locally as well, you just need to look hard) and use the other account for international browsing of 2GB. You will never use more than 2GB of openbrowse anyways because they only allow http port (can be used with some programs i know) and it is too slow anyways and very unnecasary to spam the proxy line.

So if you got a 512k or 4mb line then rather just buy 2 accounts. if you got 192k or 348k then it makes sense to buy 192k openbrowse for R60 coz you get your standard speeds almost. A new account too expensive if it just for 192k line anyways.

Hope that helped
