I see there's alot of support here for Home Assistant,

Is there any reason why its chosen over OpenHAB or other systems?

I'm just starting out with my system, I have Sonoffs wired in almost all the light switches throughout the house that work with google assistant and light switches bridged to the onboard buttons. Haven't flashed them to Tasmota yet but have managed to add my Denon Amplifer and Samsung QLED Smart TV which I can fully control (the amp at least - haven't gone too far with the TV apart from Turning on/off)

Basically it's not too far to change to Home Assistant if it proves better or whatever...

I originally installed OpenHAB and got it up and running after struggling with some Java.

At the time the different frontends confused the hell out of me and I lost interest. Picking up HomeAssistant generally felt a lot simpler when I decided to look into it again.

My few cents.
Comfortable in python which HA is based on, never touched java.
This allows me to tinker with custom components, Appdaemon which makes it much more customizable for me

@Tinuva is your man for this, he recently switched from OpenHAB to Home Assistant.

Holistically Home Assistant just seemed the better option to me and so I’ve stuck with it and quite happy.

Seen this question, but I am never at my pc to write something down

In short,
Openhab is technically superior.
Home Assistant is practically better.

So one annoyance I have with Home Assistant coming from Openhab, is how I have to restart the HA entirely or run some unknown command to restart a component after updating the config. On Openhab, I could edit any config and just tail the log files. Openhab would detect the file changed and automatically reload affected components and everything would just automatically update. HA have this to some extent if you use the UI to configure things that have support for configuration in the UI.
But for now, I live with this fact in HA.

That said, when it comes to having whatever you have in your house supported by HA, it is far superior. Things like my Surepet Petdoor, is not in Openhab, at least not when I looked at it.
Setting up a camera in HA is just soooooo much easier than in Openhab.
Writing an automation, even though HA is not perfect, is 100x times easier than in Openhab, where I still dont understand their own custom automation/scripting language.
Openhab requires the assistance of Nodered far more than HA requires it when you have a super complex automation.

Then when it comes to setting up the UI, HA wins hands down here with Lovelace, which I think is one of the best things HA did for their product.

Lastly, a move not everyone likes, where HA is moving things out of yaml configuration and making it UI only, is a good move to be noob friendly, or even just for people who really do not want to fiddle with the underlying configuration files.

Long term, I think HA will win, even if technically it is not the best product. Just look at Linux vs Windows on the desktop. Linux is far superior, but in the end Windows will always win because its easy to point and click and hope for the best and if its wrong you just try again.

@Tinuva Thanks!!!! This really answered my questions!

Writing automation in OH has been a bit of a hassle and is one reason I was looking to leave before I got too deep, I'm going to check out HA tonight.

Thanks again, big help!!!
