OpenOffice.org breaking Oracle's shackles

I have OpenOffice3.2 installed on 20 PC’s here at work, would be a shame to loose it . Ready to try LibreOffice. Only 138MB.

Openoffice is still free- and I am still using it.
I understand the concern but its just a concern atm.
Good work spitting it out though!

I will be switching over to LibreOffice because most of the companies behind it don't seem to be as evil as Oracle. :)

Also, PostgreSQL is much better than MySQL, in my opinion. I've stuck to MySQL because it's familiar.... now, Postgres is quickly becoming familiar - and I like it...

Yes. And Postgres guys are happy to answer stupid questions without the snide comments and suggestions on how to use a search engine that the MySQL guys find so uproariously funny.

What advances does this release of LibreOffice offer over OO?

Nooblet :p

It's more a politics/license/trademark issue so the dudes forked it an also merging Goo-oo patches/mods into. Oracle are evil bastards, they now want to charge US$90 for for the MS-Office ODF plugin with a minimum of a 100 license purchase so whether you want 1 or 100 ODF licenses it's going to cost you US$9000. The OSS community simply does not trust Oracle (understandably and decided to go it on their own. OSS community is also developing a free ODF plugin for MS-Office.

Yes, I understand the implications of Oracle's business model and there's no way they'll get me to cough up, but I'm not going to install the fork until it offers some advantages.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/08/oracle_jacking_up_mysql_prices/

Oracle has repeatedly declared its intent to invest heavily in MySQL technology in its effort to up-end Microsoft's SQL Server business.

What it didn't say, but which should have been clear, given Oracle's treatment of its own database customers, is that MySQL customers were going to have to pay for those investments. Through the nose.

Will use OpenOffice until the bitter end.

Worried about virtualbox though - might be a good idea to keep a copy of the Sun version...

Also saw that article on The Register - my company uses mySQL. So we'll have to evaluate this new development. *sigh*
