Openserve free installation

Anyone tried the above?

Thinking of getting the free install done, not picking an ISP and then letting it sit dormant (as a backup to my existing Vumatel FNO).
Hi

After the trial period your line will be blocked by Openserve if you dont sign up with an ISP. When your new ISP takes over the trial line, there will be activation/installation fees which your chosen ISP will either pass onto you or absorb (which might then be linked to a clawback).

It can also take a few days to activate the live service depending on how busy Openserve is. Then you must also hope that the line has no defects/breaks as Openserve will first have to fix those issues before activating the service.

What a joke

We offer free install and activation on Openserve so after the trial we can assist. We also have a promo running for a discounted monthly fee for 6 months after activation. :)

Grabbed the free install - comes with a pretty tightly locked down Nokia G-140W-G ONT.

First glance:
- ONT LAN ports are locked (barring LAN4 which appears to work)
- Management interface ports are open but filtered for access via IP / MAC I guess (so you can't login to the device)
- WLAN is on by default, BUT there's a button on the device to turn it off (not sure if this will persist across a reboot).

Hi. Have you tried connecting a wireless router to LAN4, setting up your own SSID and password and disabling the ONT wireless?

You can't disable the ONT wireless permanently (only temporarily via button) - on reboot it's back.

You could I guess attach a router to LAN 4 and share out connectivity that way, but I'd prefer to be able to fiddle with the ONT if they force the active SSID + I want to be able to use other PPPOE connections.

RE: Openserve webConnect
I wonder if you can connect your own wireless router to this Wi-Fi-enabled ONT, setup you own internal IP range and customise the wireless name/password?

Has anyone tried this?

Does anyone know if there is a FUP or limitation to streaming etc.?

Web Connect is a very restrictive service meant for low-cost access.

Web Connect doesn't even use any of the IP pools of ISP's and does not support IPv6 or even a public IPv4 address. You ISP will likely show Openserve, Telkom or SAIX. The ONT is also locked and does not allow access.

I would suggest switching to the Fibre Connect service if you want full access like a public IP, ipv6 and port forwarding.
