Hi everyone
I'm moving to a new neighbourhood next month and I now have the option to choose between Openserve and Frogfoot and then thinking of getting Afrihost or Axxess as ISP.

Do you perhaps have any suggestions or recommendations as this is the first time getting FTTH and I'm quite excited?
Thanks in advance!

Cool ideas and OpenServe. Why not get a slower speed and get a FrogFoot connection as a backup as well? I know people seem to think Fibre is guaranteed to always work, but really, it can go down at any time. I've been running 5G alongside my Fibre since I got Fibre, it really does help, especially with Fibre breaks being a reality in the real world.

Depends on your needs / requirements. If you need more than 200Mbps then Frogfoot is your go to. If you can get away with less then Openserve - they generally seem to have a more stable network countrywide, vs Frogfoot that have issues in the Eastern and Southern capes. OS is also cheaper speed for speed

We offer free install on Openserve so that might be something to consider when signing up. If you need faster than 200Mbps then FrogFoot is the option you need as they offer competitive high speed lines.

It sounds like a good idea, but luckily the work has given me an MTN data sim, so I have got a backup but not for personal use. I'll maybe add it later. Thanks for the idea.

Ja will get most likely a 50Mbps then upgrade to 100Mbps line should there be a need.

Thanks will keep it in mind.

I have Frogfoot in Port Elizabeth. Had a choice between them and Vumatel (SADV). Went the FF route as they were cheaper and have regretted it since.
Almost every other day we have notification of outages, or fixes coming on a weekend. Never had that with Openserve and ADSL. I'd go with Openserve if they trenched in front of my house tomorrow.

SADV is probably worse than FF, PE just seems to have gotten really unlucky.

@OP based on the last few weeks with how often FF is down, go OpenServe if <200Mbps.
FF seems to constantly be messing up their switch upgrades etc., and they have somehow managed to design their network that any issue anywhere in Cape Town affects everyone, think that's due to a ring topology.

They're upgrading those switches every so often here. I mean what crap do they use that they need to do that so often? Or are they just getting it wrong all the time?

The rush to deploy has left more than a few FNO's scratching...you can build yourself into a corner if you not diligent with regards to research and testing.

Thanks, I'm situated in the Northern Cape so luckily everyone forgets about us here. I've friends that are with OpenServe and said they haven't had problems with them the last 18 months at all. So will go with them most likely.

I would go with Openserve and Cool Ideas.

I was with Frogfoot for 2 years. Their network is truly genuinely a mess. Saturday mornings down for 5 hours twice. Just when the family wants to YouTube. The entire network goes down every now and then randomly for 1 hour plus.

Switched to Openserve. Zero downtime in 2 months. Early days but as an FNO Openserve is a more mature network. It just works.

Enjoy the Fibre my man. Will change your life. :)

Frogfoot is great for high speeds (1Gbps) but the issues they've had lately were not great.

Openserve hasn't given me issues.

Afrihost with either of them.

Hi there,

We are so sorry to hear this! Although we try our best to provide you with the best fibre experience possible, there are unfortunately times in which we have to do maintenance or where something else (like a break) affects your connectivity. In these cases, we do our best to get the fibre up and running as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and are trying our best to provide you with a stable connection.

Kind Regards,
Chandre

Look at that lovely packet loss.

I wish there was an alternative to FrogFoot in my area

Hectic Hectic. exactly the same situation I had. Logged with my ISP of the time (Atomic) they opened 5 tickets with FF. Nothing ever happened. In the end I just had enough. Thought I was going crazy. Hope they fix it. They are switching our their extreme gear to Juniper. Fingers crossed it helps.

I've logged numerous tickets with CoolIdeas trying to get it resolved - they even installed SDWan equipment at my house to do monitoring and bypass my equipment. FrogFoot's response? Everything is fine, must be your equipment - while showing me a graph of their bandwidth utilization at the place my line connects to. A 10G connection that sits at 80% during peak times - with a 5 minute sampling rate, which coincides nicely with when my evening packet loss starts. I'm no network guru, but it sure looks like congestion to me.
