I've been struggling to find out correct details about Openserve's webConnect. It uses a WiFi-enabled ONT. I have contacted multiple ISP's offering this package but keep getting conflicting information regarding the WiFi-enabled ONT hardware. Some say it's wireless only, weak connection, and NO LAN port. Others say it has 1 enabled LAN port. I'm trying to find out if I can connect/piggyback my own wireless router to this wireless ONT (LAN port) and then setup my own custom wireless SSID and password? Can the default gateway be changed to link my current devices with fixed IP's? (Network printer, NAS etc.). Does it have a FUP and restrictions for streaming etc.?

Please help

Hi Zoner.

From what we have seen, Openserve blocks the LAN ports but there are the odd ones where a LAN port is enabled (for device management).
There are FUP's on WebConnect and Openserve is entitled to throttle your connection once you have exceeded the usage threshold. To be safe rather assume that you will only be able to connect using WiFi and nothing else. It is not guaranteed that if you get a LAN port that is enabled and provides internet that it will stay that way.

The speed on Webconnect is either 20Mbps or 30Mbps.

Hi Zoner. Regarding openserve webconnect service. Openserve provides the customer a one device in all unit. You can not change anything on it. Wifi name and password is printed on the back of the device.

There are four lan ports on the nokia ont box but each port operates as a seperate services for isp's if the customer has more than one. For example. port 1 could have telkom, port 2 could have mweb and etc.

You could have a home and business internet on the same property but want to seperate the two networks.
One of the Lan ports is enabled for a hardwired solution. If you want a customizable router setup, you have to get a router that has Wlan port on it. From there, you can managed your network.

A few days ago, I did some research and found that both the Nokia ONT and the Huawei ONT have the same number of ports. Telkom retail/ISP confirmed that they use the Huawei ONT. Regarding LAN ports, the technical support team needs to be consulted. However, the ONT has 2.4GHz WiFi and no WiFi 5 support.
There was some confusion about the data allowance for Compact Fibre in the first 14 days; Telkom mentioned it's 200GB per voucher which is valid for 7 days, which leads me to believe that 14 days should be 400GB. They also mentioned the possibility of launching additional vouchers in the future. However, it wasn't clear whether the number of connected devices is unlimited and 200GB does not include free unlimited off-peak data usage (e.g., midnight until 6 am daily).
This information is important because Rsaweb mentioned that they only offer WiFi 2.4GHz and allow 10 devices, but there was no mention of data allowance, only that Openserve FUP applies.

You can use one LAN port to access the WebConnect internet service. Confirmed 100%.

You can attach your own router to the LAN port and setup your own Wifi SSID and Pwd on that. You cannot change the default gateway or IPs or and Port Forwarding on the ONT. There are no FUPs or restrictions, except that you get a NATted private IP address on the internet, so you can't use DynDNS as an example.

The new Huawei ONTs support dual band Wifi.

"Hi Joseph , thank you for getting in touch with us. Please accept our sincere apologies for the delayed response.

The ONT does have LAN ports, however only one will work. The service can connect up to 32 devices.

Throttling applies for the below. There is no FUP.

Telkom Easy Connect Fibre bundles have limited HD streams allowed during peak hours.

Throttling will be applied during 18:00 and 23:00 (peak times).
• 20/10Mbps Uncapped – 200GByte – throttle to 20% of line speed during 18h00-23h00
peak hours.
• 40/20Mbps Uncapped – 300GByte – throttle to 20% of line speed during 18h00-23h00 peak hours.

The 200 FUP on our Compact Fibre applies to anytime of the day that you connect."

Is this, by chance, the first time Telscum has admitted to throttling?

The TL'DR version is:

Costs R329 from Axxess (cheapest) for a 20Mb/10Mb fiber line. Free install. Billed at fraction of 1st month (E.g. if activated on the 21st of the month you only pay for 1 week at the end of the month).

Nokia provided ONT device (all-in-one device) that has 1 activated LAN port (Usually LAN 4 on the device)

First 200GB no throttling. After that it's throttled to 20% line speed during peak times of 6pm to 11pm.

That throttling with telkom I guess and not with other ISP.....
