Opensource JAVA - Winamp project

I recently discovered that there is nothing for Ubuntu that's in Winamp's league. So, on a moment of brilliance... I thought it would be great to start an Open Source project for a Winamp equivalent. Then, giving it more thought... If the engine (Core) of the program is written in JAVA, it can be used on any OS... then a frontend (skin) can be written for the specific OS.

As I'm only now starting to learn JAVA.. I don't know how plausible the idea is. Any comments?

Err, and you are going to do this yourself or are you recruiting?

Because there are some flaws in your overall mission objective, most notably using Java for the engine, rather use a Java for the GUI using swing.

The engine is going to be a mission, don't think you'll be able to do that in Java, as a whole seeing as you'd need to interface with the OS and probably import some DLL's or something in that order(I'm not a expert in Linux, so feel free to point and laugh ).

C++ and QT would be my choice (since I've used QT before and if you write the audio output part as a adapter you can have it running in Windows and Linux with minimal effort).

Overall huge project. Goodluck with that!

I have heard of Amarok, aparently it's just not the same. It's on my list of software to download at home.

Amarok is different than Winamp (XMMS), but it handles large collections of music much better than either winamp or xmms. I know somebody with 200G of mp3s. Winamp took ages to go through it, while Amarok took less than half the time.

Hmmm... perhaps its a project to put on the shelf then? I'm still kinda wet behind ears with programming (only 1yr Work Experience in C#)... and the best way to learn is to jump into the deep end, hence the motive for trying to create a skill-pushing project

Go for C++ and rewrite Windows

XMMS has always served my winamp-clone needs perfectly in Linux

While I'm at it... Is there a better dvd player than VLC for Ubuntu?
(Yes, point and laugh... you all were noobs at some things at some point)
I only recently decided to "up" class my knowledge. (Dominating the corporate environment with C# is not that exciting). So, I only recently installed Ubuntu and Swithed to Open Source Programs. (Had to delete all my illegal programs)

You can try Xine or Mplayer. Both work just fine, and are skinnable.

My thinking too... I'm stuck in Data Analytics... And I'm getting bored of re-designing the way of doing things. Wrote some awesome tools though. But I'm still to write my master-piece.... a tool that translates what I say to an Auditor's vocabulary. Because, somehow...they just don't understand my english.

Well, I found rhythmbox. Just odd that XMMS won't install.

XMMS isn't available in the Ubuntu repos anymore (it's much, much too old...though to be honest I haven't found anything better). Audacious works just as well and is derived from XMMS.
