So my "free" router (Dlink DIR-825) that came with my fiber sucks. It keeps dropping the wifi and some wifi enable devices struggle to connect to it. Requiring me to restart it every few days.
Now how do I know that it's the firmware? I don't. But I have a friend who has the identical router with the same firmware (and the same problem) and then the identical router model with a different revision (older) and that has no issues. Both from the same ISP.

So it's defiantly the router and probably the firmware.

So that brings me to my question, has anyone flashed their routers with opensource firmware?
What did you use?
How did you experience it?

I'm looking at probably using https://dd-wrt.com/

I also have the same router, since Oct 2017, running firmware V7.00 (Dec-16-2016T18:49:06), and have no issues like you are having.

I am also considering flashing DD-wrt, mainly so that I can run a VPN on it.

dd-wrt is pretty good but it's not as noob friendly as most default firmware, and if there are some advanced functions such as beam forming then you lose them.

If you're okay with that then go for it!

ROOTER (OfModemsAndMen.com) is built on OpenWRT and Lede but with a nice friendly interface. Perfect for Noobs, but easy for pros to do their thing too. They have fantastic tutorials too.
