Openview getting new channels and upgraded decoder

eMedia has announced that it will launch “a few” more channels on its Openview platform in its 2022/23 financial year.

In its annual results for 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022, the broadcaster also said it would introduce an upgraded “smarter” decoder with storage and Wi-Fi capabilities.

The demo that's buying the decoders aren't buying smart TVs ...yet
Which Smart TV's have all of the Openview channels built in?

I'm only aware of the channels you get over DVB-T2 which is missing some channels.

The demographic that is predominantly buying OpenView decoders cannot afford to pay for a DSTV subscription.

Those who are buying smart TVs generally won't be in the market for a OpenView Decoder but having an app they can download greatly increases the chances of capturing that market

My bad. My question was actually aimed at @Sapphiron about Openview and Smart TVs.

Agree with that though.

I am skeptical about the number of actual activations.
If you "brick" older decoders for "not being compatible" anymore and force people to buy a new decoder, then counting that new decoder as a new activation, then you are fudging the numbers.

I also think an APP with all the channels they send via Sat would be beneficial. I don't want a satellite dish on my roof anymore. Maintaining the LNB and buying a new decoder every couple of years is so last decade.

On the other hand how will they grow revenue, although I don't think selling relatively cheap (for me) decoders once in a while would be profitable. If they enable streaming then they can count the actual number of streams and time streamed. Would give a better indication of number of viewers, but it would need a lot of bandwidth with CDN providers.

Dstv needs strong competition, hopefully, Openview is the one. Without competition, Dstv is screening what they want us to see. Most of the local news channels on Dstv screen funeral services the whole day, no news is aired during this period.

Any news on the upgraded Openview decoder?
