Hey guys,

Tested an Openweb account last night while playing BF2 and I have to say the pings were pretty low... very close to SAIX.

So, seeing as they give you 30GB local and, say, 3GB international, I was wondering if BF2 would still be able to connect to the account server after I've used the 3GB international?

Obviously this is a key requirement for getting their account. No point in having 30GB local if you can't use it to play BF2 right?

I've pm'ed mr beep but he hasn't come back to me, maybe he hasn't checked his pm's.

Anyway, maybe you guys know?

Ciao

when i spoke to him he said that i should stick with saix

also IS is funny if you like surfing dont go with them

there network when its storming is not good

im not sure how long it takes to get into bf 2 when your 3 gigs are gone

but im sure it will take long, my advise stick with saix or ask mr beep for a test account that is capped on int but still has local see what he says

there int bandwidth comes from a satellite (spelling) which isnt good i dont think

hey killa...

I did test a capped account last night but I'm not sure it was actually capped because I could still surf international. I played BF2 and it was fine... perfect even. Not slow to connect to account server at all.

I was under the impression, however, that this would be the case because of their proxy/vpn that allows you to still surf/connect international after being capped.

So, I'm trying to suss out exactly how it works....

Thanks for the info 21alpha. Please keep us posted.

no news from Mr. Beep. Darn, I really wanted to get the account before this weekend if it works the way I hope it does.

ok, phoned him and he is giving me another demo account to test with tonight and tomorrow. Then I can make a proper evaluation and give you guys some feedback.

If last night was anything to go by though... I'll be getting an openweb account for gaming soon ;)

how does a router connect to vpn or how does a vpn work?

you must let me know how it goes alpha because i only use around 3 gig int the rest is bf 2

Hey Killa,

I use a vpn... The network guys at work just give me a config file and a certificate... then I run OpenVPN (freeware) on that config file. My router (Billion5102) supports VPN passthrough and needs no extra configuration to use the VPN. Its that simple. The config file also sets up default routes to my company network. OpenVPN also adds a new "ethernet" connection. Everything that I send to my company network then gets routed to this connection and therefore over the VPN.

On the Openweb issue. I have used it for about 2 hours tonight. The international is slow but still adequate for BF2 to connect to the account server etc. Just takes a bit longer. (it is a demo account with international bandwidth already capped, i.e. it simulates the connectivity that you would have after the initial 3 GB.)

I'm impressed. I will continue to test as long as the account works and give you updates on whether I am going to get an account with openweb or not. So far, it looks like a really cheap option if you play a lot on SGS servers, which I intend to do.

And thats without using the OpenBrowse Proxy? Cos i'v got an 2GB/28GB acc, but havent had time to play BF2 lately, and never got a chance to get myself capped and play.

The local for BF2 was also the main reason i got my acc, but never thought about the need to connect to BFHQ.

Pings to SGS in the evenings and weekends (when I've been testing) have hovered around 20 to 25. Which seems to be what everyone else on the server is getting, more or less.

There is no noticeable difference to me between SAIX and IS when it comes to ping.

I will have to check whether openBrowse proxy is enabled on this account... I don't think so though...
Well if you didnt set up ur computer to use a proxy, then I guess you aren't using one ;)

you get a ping of 25?

sucks when you're far away from everything :o, I usualy get bout 90, on SAIX and IS

no I didn't set up my browser to use a proxy, however, it is set to discover the proxy settings automatically. So its possible that that is what it is doing. On the other hand, I spoke to Mr BEEP and from what I can tell... even without openbrowse... there is an international pipe that everyone who is capped shares. This is the pipe that is probably allowing me to connect to BF2 account servers.

I can even check my stats on BFHQ etc although it is a bit slow.

I have pm'ed Mr BEEP on the openbrowse proxy issue and will post his reply here. But it looks like I'm going to get an openweb account for local gaming, and keep my prepaid account with another ISP for international browsing after I'm cappped... not that I do a lot of that, but you never know.

Any word yet from MrBeep re the BF2 issue with openbrowse?

Is it possible to simply let BF2 run as normal once capped and let it connect to the net via itself? If you need to put in proxy settings into your router (as opposed to surfing when you put them into your browser) how do you do this?

Any help on this would be appreciated as I've just got BF2 and love playing and to think my 30gig's local can't be used to play BF2 sucks..

You can let BF2 use your international capped account, and a proxy to let it Authenticate international.

So if you have a 3gb SAIX & 30gb IS account, you can use the 3GB account to Auth & 30gb to play on.

Just needs a bit of tweaks.

How does one do this? Is it a set up in BF2 itself or in something else?
